Albury and & Griffith - Operation Overwatch - NSW Police Force Aviation Command

Last Thursday the 20th of August, PolAir 7, a NSW Police Force Aviation Command Cessna Grand Caravan police aeroplane was tasked to assist local police for three days in southern NSW. The aircraft was based at Albury and Griffith Airports.

Enroute to Albury, PolAir 7’s Police Aircrew diverted around a strong weather front affecting southern NSW which contained strong winds and heavy rain by travelling west via Bathurst.

After completing a crime deterrence patrol of Bathurst, PolAir 7 was tasked to assist police in Condobolin with a search for a missing person. The search concluded successfully, with local police locating the individual. The crew then continued their operation with a patrol over Griffith before landing for fuel.

Once in the Riverina, PolAir 7 assisted local police with a crime response operation within farmland and bushland in the Leeton area. The aircrew were able to use the aircrafts agility and technology to safely assist police on the ground.

We would like to thank the police from Southern Region, especially those from the Murrumbidgee Police District for their assistance, as well as the members of the local community that assisted us in Albury and Griffith.

Today, we’re celebrating Red Nose Day. ❤️👃

Red Nose Day is a chance to come together to raise awareness, support families and help fund research focused on reducing the risk of SIDS and keeping babies safe.

To help mark the occasion, we visited some very special pre-schoolers in North Paramatta.

With red noses (far too big for them!) in place and PLENTY of excitement, the kids helped guide the POLAIR helicopter in as it landed, before getting the chance to explore the aircraft and meet the crew.

A morning of big smiles, little red noses and an important reminder of what Red Nose Day is all about. Let's start conversations and help make a difference.

🚁 World Helicopter Day 2026 – NSW Police Force Aviation Command

Today – Sunday 16th August 2026 - is world helicopter day. World Helicopter Day is celebrated globally on the third Sunday of August each year. The day gives us an opportunity to provide you with some interesting facts about our service.

The NSW Police Force were visionary and saw the benefits of helicopters early, forming the NSW Police Airwing in 1979. Today NSWPF aircraft are overhead nearly every major incident and event in NSW.

Over the last 47 years, the NSW Police Force has operated around 20 helicopters. Today the NSW Police Force Aviation Command Operates eight (8) aircraft consisting of five (5) multi-role police helicopters and three (3) fixed wing aircraft.
- Three (3) Bell 429 helicopters
- Two (2) Bell 412EPi helicopters
- Three (3) Cessna Caravans

Nearly all of our work starts as a triple zero (000) call for assistance. With over 50% of our work now in regional NSW, we operate in Sydney and the regions each shift. The work is divided nearly equally between crime response, search & rescue and criminal investigation and we are always on standby for tactical operations and specialist transport. All the work we do protects the “quality of life” of people in NSW, - simply; our mission is to help keep you, your family and your property safe whether you’re at home, at work or enjoying the outdoors.

Each multi-mission helicopter is very well equipped with a lifesaving rescue hoist, thermal imaging camera and computerised mapping and navigation systems. Multi-mission aircraft are very efficient because they can be redeployed – job to job by police radio once airborne, in many cases reducing response times to minutes. Our biggest recent technology improvements have been improved radio communications and search & rescue equipment and night vision goggles.

Looking ahead, we are continuing to embrace new skills & technology and remain focused on metropolitan & regional NSW. Our goal is to be in more places more often to help when called.

Last Friday 24 July, NSW Police Force patrol aeroplane PolAir 7 deployed to Dubbo to support Orana Mid-Western Police District as part of Operation SOTERIA, targeting youth crime, stolen vehicles and illegal trail bike use.

During the operation, we assisted local police by locating four unregistered motorcycle riders, identifying a group of young people who had fled from an incident at a supermarket, and helping detect a traffic offence involving a learner driver.

Later, we supported police responding to a domestic-related incident at a residence. Working alongside local officers, we assisted in locating those involved, leading to the arrest of a man. Police also seized a sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and other items during the incident.

We thank the police in Dubbo for their good work which lead to successful outcomes and the members of the local community that helped out at Dubbo Airport.

Orana Mid-Western Police District

On Friday 17 July, NSW Police Force, Aviation Command - Cessna Grand Caravan patrol aeroplane, was requested by Murray River Police District, in relation to a search for offenders. The aircraft deployed from Bankstown Airport. Enroute to the Albury, the PolAir aircraft flew over the snowy mountains and Mount Kosciuszko.

Once in Albury patrols were made with local police and with the assistance from the Victoria Police in one matter as it was a cross-border incident. Thanks to Albury Police & the local community for a successful day.

River Police District

Staff from the Aviation Command today met Rose Donald at the Little Wings Base at Bankstown Airport. Rose, aged 17 & sitting her year 12 exams this year, is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the youngest female pilot to fly solo around Australia. Whist attempting to break the record she hopes to raise $100,000 for the Little Wings charity. Her trip will take around 80 flying hours and she will travel 15,000kms, at the end of the circumnavigation she should have enough experience qualify for a commercial pilots licence. POLAIR IN REGIONAL NSW

In January, New South Wales Police Force Aviation Command aircrews continue to support policing across regional NSW.

Aircrews have been successful in locating missing people in hard-to-reach locations, quickly responding to crime and assisting detectives with ongoing criminal investigations.

We were based for three nights in Tamworth for New Years Eve Celebrations. During the deployment, missing person searches were successfully undertaken in Duncans Creek and Hill Grove. We also quickly responded to 000 and other calls for service across the Tamworth and New England region.

PolAir has also been working on the North Coast, with operations in Lismore, Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Taree and Port Macquarie regions. This included responding to high-risk incidents as well as response to crime and supporting local police with Operation Soteria, targeting stolen vehicles and trail bikes linked to serious criminal activity.

PolAir has provided ongoing support to the South of the State with patrols of Albury, Wagga Wagga and Griffith, as part of Operation Overwatch and Operation Mongoose, targeting high risk offenders and trail bikes involved in criminal activity. Together with local police, multiple offenders were arrested and motorbikes seized.

BLUE MOUNTAINS RESCUE: On Tuesday night 6th January 2026, PolAir 2 - a NSW Police Force Bell 412 helicopter equipped with night vision technology, was tasked to the Blue Mountains after a report was received of a bushwalker lost in rugged terrain near Claustral Canyon. The bushwalker had set out earlier in the day and had become disoriented as daylight faded, with his phone battery critically low and weather conditions deteriorating.

The police aircrew using night vision goggles and the aircraft's FLIR camera located the bushwalker on a narrow track below a cliff line. He was uninjured and able to signal the crew. The PolAir aircrew officer, was safely winched to the ground, secured the bushwalker in a rescue harness, and both were winched back into the aircraft.

The man was airlifted to Mt Tomah, where PolAir 2 landed. The bushwalker was checked as a precaution by waiting NSW Ambulance Service Paramedics.
