Construction has commenced on 264 new affordable, rent-capped homes in Green Square!

I was thrilled to help turn the sod today on Acacia Apartments – a $255m affordable housing project delivered by City West Housing, made possible through City of Sydney developer contributions and discounted land sale.

This project is a genuine collaboration, with federal Housing Australia Future Fund contributions as well as construction finance support from the Commonwealth Bank and of course, City West’s equity, delivery and management.

The project will provide 264 new homes for very low, low and moderate income households.

These will be genuinely affordable homes, capped against household income – not discounted market rates that are still unaffordable.

Affordable housing is essential for a diverse, cohesive and economically successful global city.

More importantly, it’s a basic human right.

That’s why we use all levers available to us to maximise genuinely affordable housing.

We are so proud to support developments like Acacia, which will be life changing for 264 households.

Welcome to Redfern, Warakirri College!

Not everyone learns well or thrives in traditional schools.

Rather than letting these students slip through the cracks, Warakirri's flexible model offers students a chance to re-engage with learning, and obtain qualifications for TAFE and university.

And it works! 30% of graduates have received early offers for university and 50% have gone to TAFE.

Today it was my pleasure to help open the doors to their new Redfern campus, alongside current students, alumni and staff and local MPs Tanya Plibersek and Jenny Leong.

In a former life I was a teacher who spent several years in London at an East End school. I taught students with difficult backgrounds, using sometimes unconventional methods, and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

I was reminded of those experiences this morning, walking the school halls and hearing from students and alumni who had disconnected from mainstream education, but after attending Warakirri College gone on to achieve more than they ever thought possible.

It's clear that Warakirri, which means "to grow", is a special place. A place where students can feel safe and confident so they can pursue their dreams.

The City's work has been celebrated at the National Trust of Australia (NSW) Heritage Awards! 🏆

Our wonderful refurbishment of Pyrmont Community Centre has won the Judges' Choice Award as well as Highly Commended in the Architecture category.

Meanwhile the restoration of Town Hall House, where a large portion of the City's staff work, has won the Built Conservation - Large category.

The recent restoration of the Chinatown Ceremonial Gates also received a Highly Commended in the Interiors and Objects category.

It's important for us to preserve and celebrate Sydney's heritage where we can, so I'm delighted to see these projects receive wider recognition.

Today we celebrated 25 years since the opening of the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) at Kings Cross. A milestone in public health policy.

I was honoured to be recognised as an official friend of MSIC.

As the State Government Member for Bligh, I was aware of the need for a safe injecting centre. Young people were dying from drug overdoses and the community was up in arms about people injecting on the street.

At the 1999 Drug Summit, I moved the proposal for the establishment of such a centre in Kings Cross. I was the only MP willing to have an injecting centre in my area.

MSIC is an important signifier of the kind of city we want Sydney to be – one that is compassionate and responsive to the needs of all its people, including those who struggle with drug addiction.

The Centre has supervised 1.35 million injections, successfully treated 12,292 overdoses without a single death and 27,539 clients referred to ongoing care and support.

The numbers don’t lie.

And today we heard from courageous clients of MSIC about how this life changing health service has saved their lives in times of crisis.

25 years of service is a groundbreaking achievement and a compelling case for establishing more centres like it across NSW and the country.

Let’s continue to urge the NSW Government to revise outdated legislation that prevents many more communities from reaping the benefits from a health service like MSIC.

The City will invest more than $1 billion in infrastructure, services and city-shaping projects over the next 12 months!

I know the City's budget isn't the most exciting topic for social media, but it underpins everything we do to make the City a better place to live, work and visit.

With careful planning and prudent investment over a number of years, we’ve built a strong financial position for our city. Now we're able to continue our excellent service delivery alongside support for local businesses and communities, essential infrastructure projects and the maintenance of facilities, parks, open spaces.

Have a look at some of the capital works highlights, including additional investment in our parks, pools, plazas and pedestrianisation.

The City's budget is open for public comment until 15 June, and I encourage you to have your say.

Today I was delighted to join Fort St Public students and their parents for Walk Safely to School Day!

Walking has health, environmental, social and economic benefits, and creating a walkable City has always been a priority since I've been Lord Mayor.

In June 2024, Council adopted A City for Walking: Strategy and Action Plan – Continuing the Vision, which outlines how we encourage walking by improving footpaths, lighting, wayfinding, reducing pedestrian waiting times at crossings, and slowing down traffic.

We will continue to advocate to the State Government for slower vehicle speeds including on state-controlled roads, reduced through-traffic, and greater priority at intersections for people walking.

In fact, walking accounts for 92% of trips in the city centre, with residents making an average of 3 walking trips per day. However, only 40% of street space in the city centre is for people walking – even though there are five times more people walking than driving on an average street.

Now all of this detail was lost on the kids today, but Walk Safely To School Day is about embedding great habits into families – and it looked like a great success.

We're about to upgrade the big park across the road from Central Station!

This week at Council we approved the concept design for an improved Belmore Park, which sits between Eddy Avenue and Hay Street.

We will add better lighting, larger lawn areas, more seats, new garden beds and simpler paths.

A new paved space with amphitheatre seating will enable music and dance performances, community events, markets and other activities too.

This is a really special, important space – the front door to Central. I think you'll agree it's time it had a bit of love.

Following overwhelmingly positive community consultation, the park design will now be refined with construction expected to start in 2028.

We have grown our tree canopy cover to 21.7%!

At the City we see trees as essential infrastructure – as important as roads or electricity.

We measure our canopy and green cover every two years, right down to street level, to gauge what's working and guide future planting. The latest results have just come in.

Since we began counting in 2008, we have added the equivalent of almost 94 Sydney Cricket Grounds of green cover!

We have more than halved the percentage of our LGA with less than 10% canopy cover, and more than doubled the percentage with more than 30%.

You can see there are still red dots we're working tirelessly to green. A lot of these areas are incredibly challenging to plant in because they lack deep soil beds. But we're working on it.

We are the only Australian city to consistently increase our canopy over the last decade are we're working towards 40% green cover and 27% canopy cover by 2050.

These latest results are another huge achievement. So thank you to our City Services team for their brilliant work delivering our award-winning Urban Forest Strategy!

This Federal Budget has been one of the most consequential budgets in over a decade.

The changes to Capital Gains Tax and Negative Gearing are fundamental to addressing the housing affordability crisis gripping this country. House prices and household incomes were decoupled when the Howard Government reformed these taxes in favour of investors, and this created a housing market which has locked out so many young people.

I welcome the long overdue tax reforms, which are a step in the right direction.

On 4-5 March, I travelled to Canberra with the Council of Capital City Lord Mayors to meet with Ministers and other Federal representatives about greater investment in infrastructure to support housing, and increased investment in active transport.

I am pleased that the Federal Government heard this message and included $2bn for infrastructure to support housing and half a billion dollars over ten years to support active transport infrastructure.

The funding for enabling infrastructure is needed to deliver housing in shovel-ready developments, and it is critical that this isn’t held up in negotiations with States and Territories. The Local Infrastructure Fund will help unlock the enabling infrastructure needed to finish housing projects that otherwise wouldn’t go ahead – infrastructure such as roads, water, power and sewerage.

While the investment in active transport is modest, at only $50m a year across the nation, it will be critical to expanding the network of cycleways in our cities.
