The winter 2026 edition of Shine magazine is now available.

This edition explores the theme of grit and determination, sharing stories from participants in icareโ€™s Lifetime Care and Workers Care program about resilience, and adapting to change.

Readers will meet participants like Claire, who speaks openly about embracing โ€œClaire 2.0โ€, along with Jade, Lee, Blake, Brooke and Piara, who each share their own experiences of overcoming challenges, pursuing new goals and finding another way forward.

From adaptive surfing and para snowboarding to returning to work, rebuilding confidence and reconnecting with community, these stories show that recovery is rarely linear, but progress is always worth celebrating.

The Dust Diseases Board Research Stream Grants Program is now open. This funding, administered by icare, is offered for early-stage innovations, translating research into policy and practice, and strengthening prevention and exposure control.
Previous DDB-funded projects have delivered important advances in occupational health. One example is the ๐—–hest diagnosis: a ๐—›igh-level ๐—˜ducation ๐—ฆ๐—งrategy (CHEST) study led by the University of Sydney, which explored the use of artificial intelligence to assist clinicians in identifying dust-related lung disease through chest imaging.

Bookings are now open for our mobile screening clinic in Parramatta on Monday 30 and Tuesday 31 March.

If you work in a dusty workplace your employer is expected to get you screened every year, and if youโ€™re no longer working with dust, or have retired, you may be eligible for a free lung health check.

Appointments are filling quickly, so this is a valuable opportunity to secure a spot for your team.
Employers can arrange bookings for workers by calling 1800 550 027 or registering interest via icareโ€™s lung health check page.

Workers, share this with your employer to help bring the clinic to your workplace.

Early detection matters.

While progress has been made, many of the Closing the Gap targets remain off track. The day is a reminder that meaningful change requires sustained commitment, listening to First Nations voices, and supporting community-led solutions.

At icare, we recognise the important role organisations like ours can play in creating more equitable outcomes for the communities we serve. Last week, our people across icare came together to celebrate International Womenโ€™s Day. This yearโ€™s theme, โ€˜Give To Gainโ€™ sparked discussion about advocacy and how supporting one another helps drive collective success. Our panel shared personal stories about backing others and creating opportunities for women to thrive at work and beyond.

We were also lucky to be joined by guest speaker Nadine Champion, who introduced her โ€˜10 Seconds of Courageโ€™ framework that showed us how sometimes all it takes is a moment of bravery to turn fear into action.

A big thank you to the women@icare network and everyone who helped bring this event to life and continuing to create a more inclusive and supportive workplace for everyone.

As we reflect on the day, we leave you with one question:
How will you โ€˜give to gainโ€™ today?

Watch the highlights from the event below.

Community sport brings people together across NSW โ€” from weekend games to local clubs and volunteers.

The NSW Government is seeking feedback on proposed changes to the Sporting Injuries Insurance Regulation 2019, including an increase to the funeral expenses benefit for sporting participants from $9,000 to $15,000. This change would provide greater support for families during difficult times.

Whether youโ€™re a parent, player, volunteer or part of a local sporting club, your feedback matters. It will help shape a scheme that supports safe and active participation in sport across NSW.

Find out more and have your say via the NSW Government โ€˜Have your sayโ€™ landing page.

Early detection of dust diseases like silicosis, asbestosis and mesothelioma can make a critical difference to treatment and outcomes โ€” especially for workers in regional communities.

This year, the Lung Bus begins in Newcastle and will return to the Hunter with visits to Singleton on 20 April, and Newcastle on 29 June and 26 October.

Weโ€™re pleased to work alongside Sophie Cotsis MP, SafeWork NSW and local representatives to help protect workersโ€™ health and improve access to vital screening services across the state.

After a traumatic road incident Kelly Anne suffered serious physical and brain injury that changed her life, but with determination and support from icare, she has returned to cycling and even written a book about her journey.

"My injuries are mostly invisible which means people generally think Iโ€™m OK, and often I am notโ€.
Kelly-Anne

Weโ€™re shining a light on invisible disabilities โ€” because not all injuries can be seen, but every story matters.

As we head into the holiday season, itโ€™s a good time to pause, reflect and look out for one another.

Whether youโ€™re working through the break, travelling on our roads, or celebrating with family and friends, we encourage everyone to take extra care. A small moment of caution can make a big difference.

At icare, we work with people whose lives have been changed by injury. Their stories remind us how important it is to stay safe โ€“ at work, at home and everywhere in between.

Thank you to our partners and community for your support throughout the year. We look forward to continuing our work together in the new year.

Wishing you a safe and restful holiday season from all of us at icare NSW.
