Alex is running our Basic Bird Fundamentals Course, sharing his wealth of knowledge in bird care.

The bigger picture has always been to invite volunteer organisations in to learn, share and grow together. What we know about bird care continues to evolve, especially with innovations in free flight management within the rehabilitation sector.

Today we welcome and to Feathered Friends.

Beautifully, Alex has opened the Feathered Friends facility for everyone to come together and learn. Our Feathered Friends bird vet Dr Sandra will be there too 🫶🙏🙌

Different organisations. Shared knowledge. Better outcomes for birds.

Oh man… where’s their baby?

Every bird that flew past during roll call, I was looking for the bub. As they came in, I questioned every single one.

Sitting with them can make minutes feel like hours.

Black Cockatoo fledglings stay dependent on their parents for a long time after leaving the hollow. They still need protection, guidance and the connection of the flock. That’s why orphaned blacks in care need suitable companions as soon as possible. Raising one alone isn’t how these birds are meant to grow up.

Hours passed and baby still hadn’t come home.

Then I heard a familiar call from the forest.

Baby was back.

Our little bubba 🥹🐣

I think it might be time to ask our community to Adopt a Baby and help us name one.

The money would go straight back into Black Cockatoo conservation and care. We’re always looking for better ways to fund this work while helping people feel connected to the birds they’re supporting.

Would you adopt and name a baby Black Cockatoo?

For now, I’m just glad baby is home.

Alex and Dr Sandra work hard to problem solve the medical care of birds and think outside the box of the old school avian care world.

Honestly, Alex and I couldn’t achieve the goals we do without Dr Sandra. It takes people willing to question, collaborate, learn and find better ways forward for individual birds.

Sandra, you are without doubt Alex’s greatest partner in crime in this space 😂

Thanks for everything you do, for Alex, for us and most importantly for the birds. We appreciate you more than you know.

What an incredible journey developing this bird, building her confidence, her skills and ultimately her freedom.

Kathy now soars freely at Australia Zoo. Pretty bloody special. 🦅
