Caring for family members and friends with mental illness can be rewarding, but also very challenging.

Uniting is bringing together carers, local services and carer support organisations in a series of free events across Sydney and the Central Coast in June. The Uniting Family and Carer Mental Health Program is committed to recognising, supporting and strengthening the vital role that families and carers play in the mental health system.

For any carers out there, we want you to know you’re not alone.

A sneak peek at an unforgettable day inside NSW Parliament House. 🖤

Yesterday, the Jubilee Room was filled with an incredible mix of courage, legacy, and community as we marked 25 years of the Uniting Medically Supervised Injecting Centre. From the moving speeches of our storytellers to the powerful show of support from parliamentarians across the political spectrum, the energy in the room was electric.

This is just a glimpse of the celebration. We can't wait to share more of the incredible outcomes, stories, and moments from this milestone with you all very soon. Stay tuned!

Proud Kamilaroi man and Uniting Internal Auditor for our LAC program, Harry Harrison, invites us all to take part in reconciliation.

“National Reconciliation Week is a significant time for reflection, learning, and action across Australia. It commemorates two key milestones in the nation’s reconciliation journey. The successful 1967 referendum and the High Court’s 1992 Mabo decision, both of which were pivotal in advancing the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

"The theme for this year is “All In” and it encourages all Australians to reflect on our shared histories and consider how each of us can contribute to reconciliation in meaningful ways. It urges everyone to act, emphasising that reconciliation is not a spectator sport. It is a call to action, not only to acknowledge the past but to actively shape a more inclusive and equitable future.

"It is a reminder that we all have a responsibility to recognise the importance of embedding reconciliation principles into our everyday lives. This includes supporting Indigenous communities, respecting cultural heritage, and promoting equity within our workplaces and beyond."

Sorry Day is more than an apology.

It is a time to reflect on the loss, grief and trauma experienced by Stolen Generations survivors, their families and communities.
This year’s National Sorry Day theme, From Sorry to Action, reminds us that words must be matched with accountability and meaningful action.

At Uniting, we continue to reflect on our leadership and allyship, both as a team and as individuals, and the role we play in closing the gap and creating positive change for First Nations peoples.

As we move towards National Reconciliation Week, we remain committed to reconciliation and walking together towards a better future. ⚫🟡🔴

It’s people like Fiona we want to celebrate this National Volunteer Week. Fiona volunteers for Uniting and several other organisations in her local area. As a former teacher, Fiona knows that she still has a lot to contribute even though she’s retired.

Thanks to Fiona, David was able to get his 120 hours of driver training so he could get his driver’s license. Living in a regional area, David relies on his car to get him to school and work. Fiona was able to help David out through Uniting’s driver mentoring program.

We’re so grateful to our volunteers who give up their time to help other people in the community. We celebrate you!

Take a look at how the journey of disability has evolved in Australia since the NDIS launched in 2016.

It’s a story of progress, change, inclusion, and the people driving it forward.

We’re honoured to have played a part – together with our customers, communities and partners - in this Decade of Impact. 👏

Somewhere across New South Wales and the ACT this morning, someone is reading aloud to a resident, sitting beside a learner driver, or boiling the kettle in a café where everyone knows their name.

They might have been doing it for a year, or fifteen, or forty-one.

Behind every number on this tile are real people who keep choosing to spend their time with the people in our care.

To each of the 1,028 of you: you make our places feel like home.

Thank you. 💜

Father of five, Manh, is grateful to have the support of his Uniting Father’s Support Group. He’s been coming to the group every Friday for several years and he’ll miss the group once his youngest daughter starts school. Not only has he seen his daughter grow and develop through the group, he’s found social connection with a group of fathers that understand what he is going through. The group are so close they’ve even formed a running group to stay fit.

Uniting supports families in all shapes and forms and we recognise the important role we play in bringing people together to form lasting connections. Parenting can be challenging and we aim to support families at early critical points before issues escalate.

Outlined in the Uniting Families Report ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, there are many factors that leave families without the strong network they need to thrive. Through our early intervention programs, we hope to help families find and build their village.

At Uniting, we stand for families. Families in all their uniqueness.

We’re here for big love, messy moments and all the imperfections that define families. This Families Week, we celebrate the role that families play in the community and we recognise that oftentimes, it can be challenging. We know it takes more than loving parents to raise a child – it takes a whole village.

Uniting helps families build that village and that can be seen through our early intervention work at the Cabramatta Multicultural Family Centre, where we help connect parents to supports and a wider community network.

Learn how you can benefit from our work with families by visiting our website.
