The catastrophic floods are the latest consequence of the refusal of the world’s capitalist governments to halt climate change or prepare their populations for the inevitable deadly consequences. Humanity already possesses the means to replace fossil fuels with clean, renewable energy. Yet, under capitalism, the environment and human safety are subordinated to the profits of fossil-fuel giants, while the division of the world into rival nation-states is a barrier to a necessary global effort to reorganise society based on what the science demands to prevent further climate change.

No capitalist government proposes any serious solution to climate change because it cannot be done while economic life is subordinated to the material interests of the financial oligarchy. As such, the solution to climate change is the revolutionary overthrow of capitalism itself.

The IYSSE is fighting to mobilise students and young people to become active in the struggle for socialism, the only way humanity is capable of securing a future without increasingly devastating climate calamities such as the Nepalese floods.

This week’s IYSSE meeting will discuss the socialist fight against One Nation and the lurch to the far right in the political establishment in Australia and internationally.

High school and university students walked out of class on August 13 for a day of action against One Nation. Rallies were held in all the state capital cities, as well as smaller regional centres. Some 3,000 students rallied in Melbourne, around 2,000 in Sydney, and over 1,000 in both Perth and Adelaide.

Students were compelled to denounce One Nation, a far-right, anti-immigrant outfit that has come to prominence amid the crisis of the two-party system and is being promoted by sections of the ruling elite to shift official politics even further to the right.

The IYSSE insists that the fight against the far right is a political struggle against the Labor government and capitalism itself. The task is not for students to campaign for the parties of big business in forthcoming elections, but to build a movement of the working class against the entire official political set-up based on a socialist and revolutionary perspective.

Come to this week’s IYSSE meeting to discuss this more and learn how you can join the fight for socialism!
