Together For Humanity

Together For Humanity works with schools to eliminate prejudice, so all young people feel they belong.

Through programs, activities, and events, we give students the opportunity to meet and better understand people from different backgrounds. Together for Humanity (TFH) is educating people to respond effectively to difference in schools, organisations and communities. We do this by bringing students, teachers and those in the community into contact with people from diverse backgrounds in an open, s

upportive, and enjoyable setting. This inspires interest, empathy and understanding, encourages questioning of existing prejudices and promotes greater appreciation and respect for others.

At the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Religious Education Symposium in Melbourne, Educators Kate from NSW and Beau from Victoria ran a workshop exploring Interfaith and Intercultural Understanding for Catholic schools, and hosted a stall to raise awareness about the work of TfH among Catholic educators. The inaugural symposium brought together teachers, school leaders, clergy and Religious Education professionals from primary and secondary schools for two days of inspiration, reflection and collaboration. Kate and Beau trialled a new critical thinking activity that supported students and teachers to use an intercultural lens to consider AI-generated content and its potential to reinforce stereotypes. The activity generated rich, thoughtful discussion.

In the spirit of NAIDOC Week, several of our Partnership Grant schools around the country are working year-round to embed culturally responsive practices and strengthen belonging for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. In Victoria, St Patrick’s Primary, Koroit partnered with Emma Stenhouse, a proud Ngarrindjeri woman and contemporary Indigenous artist, to strengthen understanding of Aboriginal culture. Emma also created TfH's Reconciliation Action Plan artwork 'Walking Together,' which reflects our organisational values, our care for Country and for one another. In Sydney, Engadine High School hosted a three-day Cultural Leadership Camp on Country which strengthened students’ sense of belonging, cultural pride and fostered stronger connections between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students and staff. In the Northern Rivers region of NSW, Pacific Coast Christian School is strengthening support for Aboriginal students transitioning into Year 7 to ensure a positive and successful move into mainstream secondary schooling. 📣 Calling all South Australian high schools: APPLY NOW for our Youth Summit - an exciting opportunity for secondary students from South Australia to to come together and share their ideas about identity, diversity and inclusion with peers, politicians and community leaders. The theme of the South Australian Youth Summit is 'Creating the community we want.'
A collaboration with the summit will be held on Monday 26 October at the Hilton Hotel Adelaide. Supported by the Australian Government Department of Education, this is a catered, no cost learning opportunity, and travel costs can be subsidised.

Today is the last day of National Reconciliation Week (NRW), also known as 'Mabo Day.' Many of our team attended NRW events around the country this week, in person and online. These included a Sorry Day reflection workshop at the Koorie Trust in Melbourne, 'Truth listening: Readying Australia for Truth' panel discussion hosted by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), and a NRW webinar hosted by Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority.
