A forum led by your Education Officers last Thursday, ‘Sydney Uni: School of War’. We delved into our university’s ties to Israeli higher education institutions and its partnerships with arms companies that make it complicit in Israel’s genocide of Gaza. These are the ties that we are protesting against with our encampment and the ties that we are demanding be cut.

USyd has four partnerships with Israeli institutions - Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, Technion Institute of Technology, and Bezalel Academy. For each, we explored how these institutions are on occupied land and how they materially support the IDF and contribute to the research and development of the weapons they use. On any level, these partnerships legitimise the apartheid and genocidal state of Israel, but these particular institutions are also highly involved in the propaganda and violence enacted by Israel.

Similarly with USyd’s partnerships with companies that contribute to weapons development, we outlined the University’s pride in ties to arms companies that normalises a culture of war and imperialism. With a Memorandum of Understanding and PhD scholarships with Thales (the sixth largest weapons company in the world), research on campus going towards Lockheed Martin and L3Harris, and our US Studies Centre aiming to create a “social license” for nuclear weaponry - our University is complicit in many of the world’s current conflicts. Worse, the University is encouraging and incentivising students to join them, and is prioritising such unethical partnerships over investment in our University services, staff, and education.

Next week students across Australia will be leaving their classrooms, schools and universities to protest the genocide in Gaza and the Australian government’s complicity on Feb 29 (Thursday, Week 2). School Students for Palestine and Students for Palestine groups across campuses have called for and are currently building for this National Day of Action, and we hope that you’ll join us there. USyd students and the community are invited to begin at USyd on Eastern Avenue to hear from our speakers before heading all together to Town Hall to meet other Sydney students. Check out and activists on campus who will be flyering and promoting the rally in the next week.

TONIGHT!

Join Unionists for Palestine and other activists in blocking the Israeli ZIM boat ‘Calandra’ tonight at 6PM at the Port Botany foreshore boat ramp!

ZIM shipping is the oldest and largest shipping company in Israel and has a long history of supporting war crimes and ethnic cleansing against Palestinians. There’s no place for ZIM in Port Botany, or anywhere in Australia for that matter. Come along tonight to block the boat and put pressure on the government by demanding a ceasefire, and further for a Free Palestine in this lifetime.

USYD have announced that they're abolishing the Politics/IR advanced studies stream entirely, and merging it with the INGS stream. This means an entire degree will be axed, reducing unit choice and likely also staff numbers.

Come along to Fisher Library at 1pm next Wednesday to oppose the cuts!

BREAKING: USYD PLANNING TO CUT POLITICS/IR DEGREES. Sign the open letter: https://forms.gle/9mEuJGpnyLfGC4eF8

Sydney University management have recently announced plans to discontinue the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Politics and International Relations) and merge it into the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (International and Global Studies).

This is clearly an attack on students and staff. It's highly likely to come along with serious cuts to unit offerings, and will mean an end to course-specific subjects. This could mean substantial cuts to staff.

The University of Sydney made a $300 million surplus in 2022, and over $1 billion in 2021. This money should be used to fund increases to course offerings and the reinstatement of sacked staff.

The University is also worryingly describing this major cut as 'part of a package of curriculum changes being developed by the Faculty'.

We demand that management:
- Stop cuts to the Politics/IR degree
- Release all information about other cuts to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
