A Behaviour Support Plan is only the beginning.

At Freedom Therapy Services, we believe meaningful behaviour support goes beyond assessment and plan development. Implementation is where strategies are brought to life and skills are built in the environments that matter most.

We pride ourselves on being on the ground with individuals, families and support teams - working alongside them to put strategies into practice, problem-solve barriers, and build consistency and confidence over time.

Through direct, practical support, we focus on developing meaningful skills that promote greater independence, participation and quality of life.

Because a plan shouldn’t just sit on a shelf - it should create meaningful change in everyday life.

Transitions can be challenging for some children, especially when they involve stopping a preferred activity, unexpected changes or moving into something unfamiliar.

Here are a few simple ways to make transitions easier:
⏰ Give a warning
Let your child know a change is coming - “5 more minutes, then it’s time to pack away.”

👀 Use visual supports
Visual schedules, timers or “first-then” boards can help make what’s happening next more predictable.

💬 Keep instructions clear
Use short, simple language and avoid giving too many instructions at once.

🙌 Offer choices
Where possible, provide two appropriate options - “Would you like to pack away the blocks or the cars first?”

⭐ Praise successful transitions
Acknowledge their effort - “You did a great job finishing up and getting ready to leave!”

💛 Remember: Consistency, predictability and preparation can help children feel more confident and supported during transitions.

🌈 Sensory play is more than just fun- it supports learning, development, and regulation.

Sensory play encourages children to explore the world around them through touch, sight, sound, smell, and movement. It provides meaningful opportunities to build important developmental skills while keeping play enjoyable and engaging.

Some of the benefits of sensory play include:
🧩 Supporting emotional regulation
🤲 Developing fine motor skills and coordination
🧠 Encouraging problem-solving and creativity
💬 Building communication and social interaction
✨ Exploring different textures, sounds, and sensations in a safe and enjoyable way

Whether it's scooping rice, pouring water, playing with sensory balls, or making music together, simple sensory experiences can have a big impact on a child's development.

Every child experiences sensory input differently, so finding activities that match their interests and sensory preferences can help make play both meaningful and enjoyable.

Sometimes it's not one big thing that leaves us exhausted, it's the small habits and patterns that slowly deplete our emotional energy.

You might notice you're:
- Always trying to solve everyone else's problems
- Taking on more than you realistically can
- Replaying the past over and over
- Running on too little sleep
- Putting everyone else's needs before your own

Recognising what drains your energy is the first step toward protecting it.

Remember, protecting your own wellbeing is just as important as caring for others. Setting healthy boundaries, seeking support, getting adequate rest, and making time for yourself are key to maintaining your emotional health.

Every behaviour serves a purpose, even if it doesn't always make sense at first.

Rather than asking, "How do we stop this behaviour?" we ask:

"What is this behaviour communicating?"

Behaviour can be a way of:
✔ Gaining attention or connection
✔ Escaping or avoiding something difficult
✔ Accessing a preferred item or activity
✔ Meeting a sensory need

When we understand why a behaviour is happening, we can teach new skills and create supports that lead to meaningful, lasting change.

At Freedom Therapy Services, we focus on understanding the individual first because behaviour is communication.
