Content warning: Murder, violence against transgender people.

With Trans Day of Visibility just around the corner, we are reminded of the appalling injustices and systemic violence that transgender people- and in particular trans women of colour continue to face on a daily basis. Mhelody Polan Bruno was murdered on September the 22nd 2019 in Wagga Wagga. Last Friday, RAAF corporal Rian Ross Toyer, the instigator of this murder walked free, sentenced to a 22 month intensive correction order (ICO) to be served in the community. The case has since been listed to be re-opened on the basis that an ICO can not be imposed for what the judges have deemed to be manslaughter.

We call upon the community to join together alongside Filipino community groups Anakbayan Sydney and Migrante.nsw next Monday the 29th of March at 5:30pm at Townhall Grounds near St. Andrew's Cathedral to express our solidarity against this grave injustice and call for an end to the systems of racism, sexism and transphobia. Transgender women of colour are murdered at a horrifying rate globally. This violence against trans people needs to end, and the justice and carceral system that sets a precedence of victim blaming and protection of violent offenders needs to be dismantled.
