Just letting residents in the Maroota, South Maroota, and Sackville North areas know that a planned hazard reduction burn is taking place this Monday, 27th April. Crews have been preparing this approximately two-hectare burn, located between Wisemans Ferry Road and Haerses Road in Maroota, for some time now and will be taking advantage of the favourable conditions over the long weekend. Please be aware that smoke will be present throughout the area on Monday.

πŸ”₯ Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
πŸ”₯ Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
πŸ”₯ Remove washing from clotheslines
πŸ”₯ Ensure pets have a protected area
πŸ”₯ Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
πŸ”₯ Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
πŸ”₯ If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

Bush Fire Danger Period πŸ”₯πŸš’

Please be aware that as of March 31st , the Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) has ended for our Local Government Area. However, if you plan on conducting any burns, please make sure to reach out to your local NSW RFS District Centre via https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/plan-and-prepare/farm-fire-safety/safeburning at least 24 hours prior to initiating the fire.

Today, 31 March, marks the end of the statutory Bush Fire Danger Period (BFDP) for the majority of NSW. However, due to the ongoing fire risk, the BFDP will be extended in four Local Government Areas, including Gwydir, Mid-Western, Moree Plains and Narrabri.

While many landholders may no longer require a fire permit, you are still required to notify the RFS and your neighbours of your intention to burn at least 24 hours before lighting the fire.

For more information on the bush fire danger period and fire permits, visit the website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/BFDP

Special Mention πŸ†

We'd like to make an honourable mention to one of our brigade members, Paul Biscoe, who was recently awarded as a Local Senior of the Year for Baulkham Hills at this year's NSW Seniors Festival.

As highlighted in Ray Williams MP brochure "For his tireless commitment to The Hills SES, Rural Fire Service and The Hills Shire community. A true champion.".

International Women’s Day 2026 πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸš’πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸš’πŸ‘©πŸ½β€πŸš’πŸ‘©πŸΎβ€πŸš’

We’d like to acknowledge and say thank you to all the remarkable women that are involved with The Hills Catering Brigade. With only approximately 28.3% of the NSW RFS volunteers being women, The Hills Catering Brigade is beyond grateful to the wonderful women that make up our brigade. As well as two lovely ladies, Camilla and Michaela, that make all things possible for us behind the scenes.

However, International Women's Day isn't only just about a thank you to the catering ladies, it's also a thank you to the mums, daughters, sisters, wives and friends that help us be the brigade that we are.

This year the theme for International Women’s Day is β€œBalance The Scales”, which emphasises achieving fair, inclusive, and accessible justice for all women and girls, tackling institutional barriers, gender-based violence, and systematic discrimination. Therefore, calling for immediate action to ensure we foster a society where safety and equality are not just an advantage for some, but a reality for all women.

So, let's start to balance those scales by supporting our women in the NSW RFS, and to inspire future generations to come.
