Join us at Hurstville Museum & Gallery to celebrate the opening of Fan Dongwang's exhibition Empyrean Landscape: The Year of the Dragon, 27 January - 10 March 2024.

Empyrean Landscape: The Year of the Dragon presents vibrant and colourful paintings of dragons and landscapes. As an artist who has explored images of the dragon for many decades, from jade carving to acrylic painting, Fan Dongwang’s artwork presents a unique opportunity to celebrate Lunar New Year 2024, the Year of the Dragon.

The dragon is a creature of myth and legend, a symbol of good fortune, strength and health and connects people to their past and future advancements. The artist’s multi-layered works innovatively combine traditions drawn from traditional Chinese decorative arts with contemporary Chinese landscape painting, creating a new visual language of ‘sculptural painting’, in a unique Eastern - Western fusion style.

Thank you to those who joined our second art in the afternoon session!

This month's session was themed around sculpture with participants gaining inspiration from the sculptural works in our Georges River Art Prize Exhibition, which led to some great imagination and experimentation.

We have gotten such an amazing response to these sessions that our January session is currently sold out. Stay tuned for more art in the afternoon sessions that will be returning as a regular class in the second half of next year.

Have you seen a bright new addition at Claydon Reserve?

Our latest addition to our Public Art collection is Goal by Joel Cameron.

The playful use of birds and sports equipment reflects on the sports that are primarily played in Claydon Reserve such as football, cricket, and netball, and highlights the importance of being active, having fun, and looking after our communities’ beautiful natural spaces.

Bursts of colour create a fun and welcoming space for people waiting for the bus while improving visibility.

Thank you to everyone who attended the surreal streetscape photography program on Saturday! 📷

Manfred led a group discussion on his practice of photography from the artist in residence cottage in Carss Park. Participants got to ask questions and advise such as how to select the best photos. Manfred also advised the group on the benefits of publishing photos on social media.

Manfred Krautschneider is a painter, photographer and new media artist, whose work responds to the fluidity of space and light. His works observe reality as seen in reflection, from outside, or tangentially, in order to acquire something essential and surprising about the subject.

The team here at Hurstville Museum & Gallery had an amazing time last week at the 2023 IMAGinE Awards, held at the Art Gallery of NSW.

The Museum & Gallery was nominated for an Exhibition Projects Award for 'Guraban: Where the saltwater meets the freshwater', which was exhibited from October 2022–January 2023.

Congratulations to our wonderful curators for this nomination! We extend a special thank you to the Gujaga Foundation and all First Nations groups, individuals, and artists involved in Guraban for their support of and hard work on the exhibition.
