The Consul-General of Brazil in Sydney, Mr Marcos Arbizu de Souza Campos, visited Parliament of NSW this week for a meeting with President of the Legislative Council Ben Franklin 🤝

Discussions highlighted the longstanding connections between Australia and Brazil, as well as shared interests in democratic engagement, electoral processes, and the preservation of Indigenous languages and cultures 🇧🇷 🇦🇺

Week 1 of the 2026–27 Budget Estimates hearings is complete, marking a busy week of questions, scrutiny and accountability.

Our Upper House committees examined the following portfolios:
👉️ Climate Change, Energy, and the Environment with Minister Penny Sharpe MLC
👉️ Customer Service and Digital Government, Emergency Services, and Youth Justice with Minister Jihad Dib MP
👉️ Education and Early Learning, and Western Sydney with Minister Prue Car MP
👉️ Water, Housing, Homelessness, Mental Health, and Youth with Minister Rose Jackson
👉️ Lands and Property, Multiculturalism, Sport, Jobs and Tourism with Minister Steve Kamper
👉️ Roads, and Regional Transport with Minister Jenny Aitchison MP
👉️ The Treasurer, Daniel Mookhey MLC
👉️ And, The Premier, Chris Minns

The hearings continue next week, with another ten portfolios to be examined.

🚬 Inquiry report tabled: Illegal to***co trade

Our Upper House committee has released its report on the illegal to***co trade, making 11 recommendations to reduce illicit to***co activity, strengthen enforcement and improve regulation.

Committee Chair Robert Borsak said the committee was "alarmed by the expansion of the illegal to***co trade and its connection to organised crime, placing local communities and business at an increased risk of harm".

The report's key recommendation is for the NSW Government to call on the Australian Government to reduce to***co excise rates to their January 2019 level, following the committee's finding that higher excise rates have played a significant role in the growth of the illicit to***co market.

Where does government funding go, and is it delivering results?

The 2026-2027 round of Budget Estimates hearings begin this week in the NSW Legislative Council, with 24 public hearings taking place over the next three weeks. Ministers and senior public servants will appear before Upper House committees to answer detailed questions about spending, performance and government priorities.
