Yesterday, Parramatta YCW’s leaders, volunteers, and workers met with Minister Sophie Cotsis (Minister for Industrial Relations of New South Wales) to discuss the challenges young people are currently facing in the workforce.
We spoke about the growing uncertainty many young people are currently facing around employment and career pathways, especially with the rise of automation and AI, job insecurity, and the pressure of choosing degrees and industries that may rapidly change in the future.
We also discussed the rising costs of education, placement poverty, and entering the workforce, particularly for international students living in Australia who are navigating high living costs alongside study and work pressures.
This was an incredible opportunity to share the lived experiences, fears, and hopes of young people directly with government.
Minister Cotsis has expressed interest in hosting a future roundtable to continue hearing from young people about the realities of entering the workforce and to explore ideas that could better support young workers and students.
Thank you to the Minister for taking the time to listen to our stories, concerns, and experiences, and for giving YCW the opportunity to showcase the incredible work of our volunteers and leaders.
If you’d like to be involved in the future roundtable, or want to share your own experiences about work, study, or the pressures young people are facing today, we would love to hear from you!! Shoot us a DM or email us at [email protected] ✨
