🌊 Today is World Oceans Day, and we celebrate not only our oceans but also the incredible wildlife that depends on them.
But celebration must be matched with action.
We're calling on the NSW Government to urgently establish a protected marine sanctuary at Terrigal Haven to protect critically endangered Grey Nurse Sharks and other vulnerable marine life.
If you've ever visited or swum at Terrigal Haven, you know how special it is. Its clear waters and thriving reef provide habitat for Grey Nurse Sharks, Green Turtles, Blue Groper, seadragons, dolphins, and migrating humpback whales.
Yet this important marine habitat remains completely unprotected.
Earlier this year, the community was devastated when images emerged of a dead Grey Nurse Shark on the rocks at Terrigal Haven with a hook in its mouth. Around the same time, multiple Grey Nurse Sharks were spotted swimming with hooks and wire tracers still embedded in their mouths.
Grey Nurse Sharks are critically endangered. Only around 1,420 adults remain along Australia's entire east coast. Every injury. Every death. Every loss matters.
And it's not just the sharks. Endangered Green Turtle Terry was rescued from these same waters after fishing line became so tightly wrapped around his flipper that it had to be amputated.
Terrigal Haven deserves real protection. Right now, there is no marine sanctuary, no enforceable protections, and nothing standing between these animals and the next preventable tragedy.
This World Oceans Day, add your name and help protect one of the Central Coast's most important marine habitats.
