Our Year 12 Hospitality students have completed their final practical assessment this week!

Planning, preparing and serving a special two-course meal for their loved ones, students showcased the wide range of skills they have developed throughout their Certificate II in Hospitality course. Guests were treated to a delicious entrée of crumbed calamari, followed by fish and chips with tartare sauce. Perhaps our nautical roots were always destined to make an appearance in Year 12 Hospitality!

It was wonderful to see their confidence, organisation and hospitality skills come together as they welcomed their guests and put their learning into practice. Some very lucky staff even snagged an invitation to join them for lunch!

We know they couldn’t have done it without the incredible support, guidance and encouragement of Mrs Beth Townsend and Mrs Deb Carlson. Thank you both for everything you have done to support our students throughout their Hospitality journey.

What a beautiful way to begin what is sure to be a season of lasts for our Class of 2026!

Wednesday morning, parents and members of the Oxley community were welcomed to see the incredible Metal and Timber Major Works created by our Year 12 students.

We are incredibly proud of what our students have achieved. Major Works represent a huge investment of time and commitment, while also giving students the opportunity to develop their time management skills as they balance their projects with the demands of Year 12.

It was wonderful to see our community come together to celebrate the students’ work, with our Year 12 Hospitality students also hosting breakfast for our guests.

A special thank you to our TAS team for the guidance and support provided throughout the Major Works process. Mr Sam Brown, HT TAS, Mr Heath Falkenmire in Timber and Mr Cary Smith in Metal have worked closely with our students to help bring their ideas to life.

It was also lovely to see teachers who are currently on leave return to celebrate with their students and colleagues and for staff to see the incredible finished pieces.

We are so proud of our Year 12 students and what they have achieved.

Oxley High School Alumni – Where Are They Now?

This week we’re catching up with Oxley alumnus Alex La-Chiusa, better known to many of us during his school days as Chewy!

Back at Oxley, you could find Alex making ridiculous short films in Mr Jacobs’ Photography class, acting a fool in Ms Hodges’ Drama class and working on his own graphic novel with the help of Mrs Reading and Mr Baumgart in Art.

After heading to Newcastle for university, Alex has returned to Tamworth and is now working as an eLearning Officer with Hunter New England Health, designing and developing online learning content.

And the creativity hasn’t stopped! Outside of work, Alex continues to make short films with friends, with two of his horror shorts having played at film festivals around the world.

He’s also about to begin a new chapter as a Credentialed Trainer for NSW Health — something he credits his Oxley teachers with inspiring him to pursue.

We love hearing how the creativity encouraged at Oxley continues to shape the paths our alumni take.

Keep making those ridiculous short films, Chewy — and we’ll be keeping an eye out for shorts three, four and five!

Good luck to all the nominees in the Tamworth Business Chamber Awards!

​It is an absolute privilege to see so many members of our Oxley High School community—and Oxley High School itself—recognised for the work being done across Tamworth and beyond.

​We are especially proud to see our former students right alongside us among the nominees. It is always wonderful to see where they are now, the paths they have taken and the contribution they are making to our community.

​From all of us at Oxley, we wish every nominee the very best for the awards. Just like we remind our students at school, sometimes it’s about having a go, giving your best and being proud of how far you’ve come — not just about who finishes first!

Fermi Challenge - Numeracy Game Day 2026

Today, Year 9 Science O Period 5 took on the Fermi Challenge and tackled a deceptively simple question:

How many students could safely fit in our laboratory?

It didn’t take long for the questions to start coming back to Mrs Jaffrey:

How big are the students?
How many teachers are there?
Can we move the furniture?
What does “safely” mean?

Mrs Jaffrey tried her best to keep the hints to a minimum, leaving students to make their own assumptions, measure, calculate and justify their thinking in groups before presenting their reasoning to the class.

With A3 paper, a metre ruler, the contents of their pencil cases and trundle wheels, students measured up Macquarie 4 and worked out their own estimates.

The answers? Anywhere from 32 to more than 6,000 Willems, 234 Carlys, and plenty of numbers in between!

We also discovered that some students take instructions very literally — happily making sure the student-to-teacher ratio didn’t go beyond the recommended Year 9 class size of 30 students! Although, thankfully, they did suggest that Mrs Jaffrey was competent enough to supervise 32!

The goal wasn’t to find one “correct” answer. It was about making assumptions, using measurement and numeracy, working collaboratively, and being able to explain and justify your reasoning.

A great afternoon of Science, Mathematics, problem-solving and a few very interesting interpretations of the word safe!

NSW Health will be visiting Oxley High School to provide catch-up vaccination clinics for eligible Year 7 and Year 10 students.

If your child is in Year 7 or Year 10 and has missed one of their routine school vaccinations, this is an opportunity to get their vaccinations up to date.

Year 7 students may be eligible for:
• Diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough) — dTpa
• Human papillomavirus — HPV

Year 10 students may be eligible for:
• Meningococcal ACWY — MenACWY

If your child is due for a catch-up vaccination, please provide your consent online.
