Recent fire at Sassafras, a timely reminder about fire safety as we move into the warmer months 🚒🔥

GRASS / SCRUB FIRE SASSAFRAS | This afternoon 7 RFS appliances responded to a grass and scrub fire at Sassafras.

The fire is believed to have started from careless fire management practices, therefore RFS legal process officers will undertake further inquiries.

Fortunately winds in the area were calm which resulted in a slower rate of spread, although the tussock grass created flame lengths of over 2m and contributed to the fire spread. A mix of large tankers and smaller strikers were deployed, this provided a strong weight of attack and the necessary mobility to get around the fire and contain it, before it caused any further damage.

Safe and legal burning is a landowners responsibility. If winds had been gusty, it is likely that the fire would have threatened property and live stock.
