This World Environment Day, we're celebrating Noosa's enduring dedication to preserving our unique natural environment.
And thanks to the collective efforts of our community, volunteers, and environmental groups, we’re making real progress toward a healthier, more resilient future.
Here’s what we’ve achieved together so far:
🌿 43% of Noosa Shire (that’s 34,499 hectares!) is already managed for its environmental values, and we’re on track to reach our goal of 48% by 2028.
🌳 121 hectares secured for conservation: We've purchased a Kin Kin property on the Cootharaba Range using Environment Levy funds, permanently protecting critical habitat for Koalas, Greater Gliders and Powerful Owls.
🌱 Over $1.78 million in environmental grants have been invested and supported community-driven projects since 2019.
🦜 467 Land for Wildlife properties and 25 conservation agreements are helping to protect local biodiversity and create wildlife corridors.
🙋 Bushcare volunteers have planted 11,200+ native plants and removed more than 1,200m³ of invasive weeds.
♻️ 44,690 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill in a year thanks to better recycling and recovery efforts.
🤝 We’re also progressing the implementation plan for our historic Kabi Kabi First Nations agreement, acknowledging and embedding Traditional Owner values into how we care for Country.
🌊 Climate resilience programs are helping our community prepare for future challenges, from coastal erosion to extreme weather.
🌲 Four trees within Noosa Shire have recently been recognised as Queensland champion trees on the National Register of Big Trees Australia, including a Eucalyptus grandis estimated to be around 500 years old.
🐢 This season saw a record number of sea turtle nests recorded on Noosa North Shore.
🌊 Our Environmental Services Team completed AUSMAP microplastics assessment training, strengthening efforts to monitor plastic pollution and help protect Noosa’s waterways and marine environment.
Big or small, every action adds up. This , we say thank you to everyone for your contribution to a green and resilient Noosa.
