Exciting things are happening out on the Warri Gate Road! Following the funding from the Federal Government under the Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program, Council have started preparing for 2 - 3 years of work for our staff and local contractors. There has also been significant flood damage restoration completed in the last few months on Warri Gate.

Some great news for Warri Gate Road! This is a huge step in the right direction and 20km closer to a sealed road North to South!

Council has been successful in obtaining the $8 million funding from the Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program. We will contribute $2 million to total our $10 million for the Warri Gate Road - this should get us about 20km of new seal!

This is a big achievement for Bulloo Shire and our campaigning for Warri Gate and will secure 2 - 3 years of work for our crews and some local contractors. This is Stage 1 of the funding and with some more lobbying we hope to get this sort of funding for the next 4 - 5 years.

Bulloo Shire Council is currently constructing a camp along the Warri Gate Road so our crews can access their site with ease.

Council has also just applied for a grant through the Australian Government's Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program and if successful, would allow us to complete a further 20km of seal on Warri.

With the Government announcing the $678 million to fund the essential sealing of the Northern Territory road that has been lobbied for, for decades - it gives us hope that Warri Gate Road won't be forgotten.

Amidst this pandemic, overseas trips may be far off, with great rural and remote destinations in our back yard , our communities are noticing a new demographic of travelers.

Sealing the Warri Gate road will help ensure the safety of these visitors and expand tourism in our rural and remote communities.

Another section of the Silver City Highway, north of Tibooburra towards Warri Gate has now been sealed. This leaves only 33.3 kilometres unsealed between Tibooburra and the Queensland border. These remaining sections are either under construction or in the final design phase and are due to be completed by this time next year. In September 2020, I wrote to the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads in support of the Pastoralists’ Association of West Darling’s request to prioritise funding for sealing the Warri Gate Road -from the NSW border through to the existing bitumen southwest of Noccundra.
The Bulloo Shire Council in Queensland, has also raised the matter of sealing Warri Gate Road with Minister Bailey and has requested $75 million over 10 years to fund the Warri Gate Road sealing project.

The connection of these unsealed roads would facilitate livestock movement, north and south and open up an all-weather inland freight route for the benefit of tourists and primary producers.

Agriculture is a significant industry for Bulloo Shire employing 29% of the working age population. This generates an economic input of $68 million which is 62% of overall economic return for the Shire (Economy ID 2020). Improvement in the condition of Warri Gate Road will only enhance the value of agriculture within the region and improve access for intra and interstate transport of agricultural products (TraNSIT 2020).

As a result of sealing the Warri Gate Road, a number of political, economic, social and environmental benefits would be realised by road users and are anticipated to accrue to the broader community through so-called 'wider economic impacts', including:

1️⃣ Improved access for tourists, bringing more people to the area and creating opportunities for tourist related businesses
2️⃣ Improved efficiency in the delivery of education, health and emergency services to local communities
3️⃣ Improved access for pastoralists and local communities during and following wet weather
4️⃣ Improved property values due to more reliable access
5️⃣ A demonstrated commitment by Government to respond to the needs of communities in remote areas
6️⃣ More sustainable use of gravel in the area and less environmental damage to the waterways from gravel run-off
7️⃣ Greater social cohesion due to improved and more reliable access
