With the drier weather, we are seeing an increase in rural burn-offs, not all of which are notified or well prepared.

Although permits are not currently required (until 31 Aug), it is still mandatory to notify the RFS of any planned burns.

To do this is easy.

Just follow the link below and select "Notify of your planned burn". Provide some details about the burn and you will receive an email acknowledgement. Make sure you also notify your neighbours 24 hours prior to your burn.

This does not apply to Nimbin Village. Anyone seeking to burn-off in the Village must seek approval from Lismore City Council. RFS cannot authorise this.

Happy NAIDOC Week 🖤💛❤️
This week we celebrate the history, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and acknowledge their enduring connection to country.
As a brigade, we are proud to serve on Bundjalung Country and recognise the knowledge, traditions and care for country that have been shared by First Nations people for tens of thousands of years.
We thank the traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work and volunteer, and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
From all of us at The Channon RFS, we wish everyone a safe, meaningful and enjoyable NAIDOC Week.

🌟 National Volunteer Week 🌟

This year’s theme, “Your Year to Volunteer”, is a reminder that every volunteer makes a difference — whether it’s giving a few hours or many years of service to their community.

Today we would like to thank all of our dedicated brigade members who volunteer their time to protect and support our community. From responding to emergencies and attending training, to fundraising, community engagement and supporting one another behind the scenes — none of it would be possible without our volunteers. 🚒

We also extend our thanks to every volunteer across our community and beyond. Volunteers are the backbone of so many organisations, and their generosity, commitment and willingness to help others makes our communities stronger every day.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, maybe this is your year to volunteer. ❤️

Congratulations to The crew members of The Channon Fire Brigade who were awarded a Premier’s Citation to recognise the invaluable contribution to the response efforts during major floods that impacted Lismore and The Channon in 2022. Well done and thank you to all who provided much needed assistance during these flood events 👏.

Like many across NSW, we have woken to the devastating news that three people have died following a boating accident off the Ballina bar, including two Marine Rescue volunteers.

Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, those still waiting for answers, those who survived, and the wider Marine Rescue community.

Marine Rescue volunteers give their time to help others in some of the most dangerous and unpredictable conditions. To lose volunteers while they were out serving their community is heartbreaking beyond words.

Emergency services have worked tirelessly through the night, with the search and response continuing today.

On behalf of The Channon RFS, we extend our deepest condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy.

Training today consisted of assisting a land owner burning a pile of waste vegetation then pumping and filling the truck from assorted water sources. Thanks to all the crew who attended.

We would like to give a friendly reminder that even though the bushfire danger period will end at midnight tonight (31st March) , you are still required to notify your intention to burn to the Rural Fire Service. Follow the link below or call 02 6626 6922.

This is not a new rule, but with more people moving into rural areas, it is important for everyone to follow the rules.
If your fire is reported to 000 and you've failed to notify the RFS, significant fines can be issued.

Notifying all adjoining neighbours (including those directly across a road or creek) at least 24 hours prior to lighting, is still a requirement, regardless of the time of year.

Volunteers do not want to attend if you do not require help, so we ask you to take a few minutes to notify your intention.

The Bush Fire Danger Period ends on Tuesday the 31st of March at 12pm.
Though permits are not required you still must notify your neighbors and the Fire Control Center before lighting a fire.
