This week is National Volunteer Week, a chance to recognise and thank every member of Thornton Rural Fire Brigade. Every one of our members is a volunteer, giving their time to respond to fires and emergencies, attend training and courses, and support community events throughout the year.

The 2026 theme, “Your Year To Volunteer”, celebrates the incredible contribution volunteers make to communities across Australia, while encouraging others to get involved.

Whether on the frontline or working behind the scenes, our members continue to show dedication, teamwork and commitment to protecting our community.

If you see one of our members out and about this week, give them a wave or stop for a chat — you might even find out how you can become part of the brigade too.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate the strength, dedication and compassion of mums everywhere, but especially those in our family.

Across the state, thousands of mothers, grandmothers, mothers-in-law, stepmothers and aunties give their time to help protect their communities. Whether they're on the frontline or supporting behind the scenes their contributions are extraordinary.

Today, we thank them for all they do, not just as RFS members, but as leaders and role models in our brigades and communities.

The members of Thornton Rural Fire Brigade extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the two Marine Rescue members who tragically lost their lives while carrying out a rescue.

Their courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to protecting others reflect the very best of our emergency services community. This loss is felt deeply across all agencies, and we stand in solidarity with our Marine Rescue colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.

Today marks St Florian’s Day — a time to recognise those who go above and beyond in service.

Throughout the recent fire season we have committed crews interstate and locally to a number of large scale fires.

We thank all our members for their dedication, commitment, and continued efforts in protecting our community.

It’s been a busy few days for our brigade!

A huge congratulations to our four newly qualified firefighters Aaron, Jay, Lachlan and Aidan, who wasted no time putting their training into action. Within hours of completing their course on Sunday, they responded to their first call — a large mulch fire — working alongside crews from Pindimar and North Arm Cove.

Our new Cat 7 tanker was also put through her paces at a bush fire in Tanilba Bay, and we can confidently say we are incredibly impressed. This versatile appliance has already proven its value, and you’ll definitely be seeing a lot more of Thornton 7 in action.

Well done to all involved — a fantastic team effort all round.
