It was a pleasure for Toogoom RFB to receive a visit from our local member John Barounis MP last night for our regular training night. Not only was he interested in discussing our operational criteria, he was also keen to participate in some activities.

If you would like to have a fire that’s bigger than 2 meters in any direction, or burn off some grassland, in Queensland you need a permit. They are free to obtain, all you need to do is ask your local Fire Warden. Just google Fire warden Qld and you’ll get the following;

https://www.fire.qld.gov.au/safety-education/using-fire-outdoors/fire-wardens

Once you apply, the Warden will have a discussion with you and maybe visit your property to determine what conditions you need to satisfy, in order for your burn to be safe.
At this time of year it’s perfect weather, and the fuel is in great condition for having a Hazard Reduction Burn. This is why you’ll see lots of fires happening around our area. Most of our Rural Fire Brigades get involved in many of these burns, but sometimes a permitted burn doesn’t specify their attendance. When it does, they must be present before a fire is started.
Remember, get a permit then, COMPLY with the conditions.

Residents in the region of Rolys Rd Takura are advised of potential smoke in the area as Toogoom RFB will be conducting an approved Hazard Reduction Burn commencing this morning.
‘Hazard reduction burns are controlled, planned fires lit during safe weather conditions to clear dead leaves, twigs, and grass. These proactive burns lower future bushfire intensity, protect communities, and support local ecosystems, differing from emergency backburning used during an active fire.’

Good advice.
