🚨Defending your property workshop! 🚨

CFA District 12 is hosting a FREE Defending Your Property Workshop. This full-day, face-to-face session will give you the practical skills and knowledge you need.

What the workshop covers:
🔴 Understanding fire behavior and Fire Danger Ratings.
🔴 Assessing and modifying property risks.
🔴 Physical and psychological preparedness.
🔴 Water, resources, and equipment requirements.
🔴 Practical session: Hands-on experience with pumps, hoses, and equipment!

▫️ Time: 9:00 am – 4:30 pm
▫️ Location: Hilldene Fire Station (470 Seymour-Tooborac Rd, Hilldene)

🔥❄️ Stay warm this winter — but remember to stay fire safe

As the nights get colder, we’re using heaters, electric blankets and other appliances more often. Winter is the peak time for heater-related fires, so now is a good reminder to check your heating and electrical safety.

A few simple habits can help keep your home safe:

🔥 Turn heaters off before going to bed or leaving the house.
🏡 Keep anything that can burn at least 1 metre away from heaters and fireplaces.
🔌 Avoid overloading power boards and check cords and appliances for damage.
🛏️ Be extra careful with heaters and electrical appliances in bedrooms and living areas.

Before you settle in for a cosy winter night, take a moment to check your home is safe.

🥶❄️ Cold nights are here… but don't let staying warm put your home at risk.

Electric blankets and heaters help keep us cosy through winter, but they need to be used safely. Here are a few simple safety reminders :

🛏️ Turn your electric blanket on about 30 minutes before bed, then turn it off as you get into bed.

🔥 Turn portable heaters off before leaving the room or going to bed.

📏 Keep heaters at least 1 metre away from curtains, bedding, clothing, furniture and anything else that could catch fire.

🧺 Never dry clothes on or near heaters.

🔌 Check electric blankets and heater cords for fraying, damage or hot spots before using them each winter.

🚨 Working smoke alarms save lives. CFA recommends installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home. Test them monthly and replace the batteries each year (unless your alarm has a sealed 10-year battery).

A few extra minutes before bed could help prevent a house fire. Stay warm, stay safe, and sleep easy this winter. 💛🚒

🥶🔥 Winter is the peak time for house fires – is your family prepared?

As the weather gets colder, we spend more time indoors using heaters, fireplaces, electric blankets and cooking warm meals. Unfortunately, this also means the risk of a house fire increases.

A home fire can spread incredibly quickly, so having an escape plan could save your life.

Take a few minutes with your household to:

🔥 Identify two ways out of every room where possible.

🏡 Choose a safe meeting place outside, such as your letterbox.

📞 Make sure everyone knows how to call Triple Zero (000).

👨‍👩‍👧 Practise your escape plan together at least twice a year – especially if you have young children.

Remember:
✔️ Get out.
✔️ Stay out.
✔️ Call 000 from a safe location.

Children don't always wake to the sound of smoke alarms, so it's important to think about how you'll reach them if your usual path is blocked.

🧦🌧️ Anyone who lives up here knows the winter struggle…

The washing has been drying for three days and somehow it's still damp!

When the weather is cold and wet, it can be tempting to hang clothes, towels or blankets near your heater or wood fire to help them dry faster.

But did you know that drying items too close to a heat source can create a fire risk? 🔥

Heat can build up in fabrics over time, increasing the risk of them igniting.

A few simple tips to help keep your home safe this winter:

🔥 Keep clothing, towels, blankets and other flammable items at least 1 metre away from heaters and fireplaces.

🛡️ Fireplace guards are fantastic for keeping children and pets safe — they're not designed to be used as drying racks.

🪵 Keep the area around your wood heater clear of anything that could catch fire.

👀 Never leave items drying near a heater unattended.

We all love a warm, cosy home in winter — just make sure you're keeping it safe too. 💛🚒

🔥🪵 Halfway through winter... have you checked your chimney?

If you're keeping warm with a wood heater this winter, now is a great time to check your chimney or flue.

Over time, soot and creosote build up inside chimneys. If left unchecked, this build-up can ignite and cause a dangerous chimney fire.

A few simple checks can help keep your home safe:
🧹 Inspect your chimney or flue for soot and creosote build-up.
🪵 Only burn dry, well-seasoned firewood to reduce smoke and deposits.
🔥 Keep your fire burning hot enough to minimise creosote build-up.
👨‍🔧 If you're not comfortable inspecting or cleaning it yourself, or you're unsure when it was last cleaned, arrange for a qualified chimney sweep to inspect and clean it.

Regular maintenance is one of the simplest ways to reduce the risk of a chimney fire and keep your wood heater working efficiently.
