New report: PIA's proposals for the Housing Summit
With the Queensland Housing Summit now less than two weeks away, PIA has released a new report highlighting 20 actions that can be taken to help address our housing challenges.
PIA's new report, Delivering housing for all: 20 actions for the Queensland Housing Summit, is focussed on five outcomes:
Delivering more secure housing for those most in need.
Supporting growth and opportunity across our regions.
Planning that enables more diverse homes that meet community needs.
Building community support for urban growth and change.
Tracking progress with better data to inform action.
It is important to recognise that housing affordability is a complex, multifaceted issue - influenced by a variety of demand and supply factors. Whilst planning can influence some aspects of housing affordability, it cannot control the most significant factors which shape housing in Australia.
Low interest rates, favourable tax settings, high population growth and the ready availability of capital have all helped supercharge demand for housing, whilst supply chain factors like the availability and cost of construction materials and trades shortages are further exacerbating cost pressures.
Our report recognises this complexity, and seeks to provide practical and constructive ideas to strengthen planning in Queensland. We also address non-planning issues that affect our ability to deliver the ambitions in our regional and local plans.
Earlier this week, we presented copies of this report to the Queensland Government as a submission for the Housing Summit, which will take place on 20 October.
We will continue to keep members informed of developments as we head towards the Queensland Housing Summit.
