Australia faces a national emergency of violence against women and girls. This violence is driven by gender inequality: the attitudes, behaviours and social norms that excuse, minimise or disrespect women.

Young people’s attitudes are being shaped by exposure to misogynistic attitudes, content and commentary. To change this, we need to make it clear that misogyny and violence against women and girls is unacceptable.

At headspace, we acknowledge victim-survivors of sexual assault and violence. To anyone who has experienced sexual harm, we believe you. We recognise the courage it takes to talk with someone and seek support. The responsibility for harm always sits with the person causing it, never with the victim-survivor. We condemn perpetrators of sexual violence, and anyone who minimises, excuses or ignores it.

Young people are watching how adults, institutions and communities respond when sexual violence is spoken about and reported. They notice when harm is taken seriously, and when it is dismissed, minimised or excused. These responses shape how young people learn about consent, accountability and safety.

As a society we have a responsibility to teach and model consent and respect, challenge misogyny and harmful attitudes, and create the conditions for young people to hold themselves and their peers accountable. We need to create environments where victim-survivors feel safe to disclose harm, are believed and supported when they do, and are never blamed for violence they have experienced.

Challenging misogyny also matters for boys and young men, who are harmed by the narrow expectations, world views and behaviours it reinforces. It also matters to anyone who is concerned about their friends’ attitudes and behaviours, or anyone who has witnessed sexual violence and harm being perpetrated.

For those who have experienced trauma, violence or sexual harm, the current media coverage may be overwhelming. Exposure to these stories can evoke feelings of anxiety, fear, anger, sadness or helplessness.

For any young person experiencing stress, distress or mental ill-health as a result of sexual violence or the recent media stories, headspace is here for you.

The Townsville Housing and Homelessness Network Hahn Townsville and Surrounding Areas has launched a petition calling for a dedicated homeless shelter in Townsville.

Everyone deserves access to a safe place to sleep, and a dedicated shelter would provide an important place of safety, dignity and support for people experiencing homelessness in our community.

šŸ’™ VOICES OF CARE — COME DOWN AND SAY HELLOšŸ’™

Sometimes support doesn’t begin in an office.
Sometimes it begins with a chair in the shade, a friendly face, and a simple conversation.
This Thursday 20 August, the Wellways team will be down at Landsborough Street Headland on The Strand from 9:30am–12:30pm for Voices of Care.
So… what are we doing down there?
Connecting with our community. šŸ’™
We’ll be there to chat, listen, share information about local supports, and help make it a little easier to know where to turn when life gets difficult.

You don’t need a referral.
You don’t need an appointment.
And you certainly don’t need to have the right words.
Maybe you’re having a difficult day.
Maybe you’re supporting someone who is struggling.
Maybe you’re curious about what Wellways does.
Or maybe you’re simply walking past and feel like saying hello.
You’re welcome.
Come and:
šŸ’¬ Have a chat
šŸŽ Grab a goodie bag
šŸ‘‹ Meet some of the Wellways team
ā„¹ļø Learn about support available in our community
We believe good mental health support begins with connection, conversation and community.
And sometimes, a conversation really can make all the difference.
šŸ“… Thursday 20 August 2026
ā° 9:30am–12:30pm
šŸ“ Landsborough Street Headland, The Strand
