The Townsville HHS comprises 21 facilities across its catchment; 19 hospitals and community health campuses and two residential aged care facilities. It covers a geographic expanse extending north to Cardwell, west to Richmond, south to Home Hill, and east to Magnetic and Palm Islands. As northern Australia’s only tertiary-level health service, the HHS services an extensive catchment stretching fr

om Mackay in the south, north to the Torres Strait Islands, and west to the Northern Territory border. We have a catchment population of 695,000 people and growing, with a geographical footprint of 148,000 square kilometres. At the centre is Townsville University Hospital (TUH) - the only tertiary referral hospital in North Queensland. TUH provides the latest in cardiac, obstetric, gynaecological, paediatric, neurosurgical, orthopaedic, cancer, mental health, neonatal, allied health, and intensive care services. What's with all the jerseys today?🎽

Jersey Day is an important reminder to have a conversation with your family and loved ones about organ and tissue donation. 🫀

The initiative was started in memory of Nathan Gremmo, who died in a critical accident and became an organ donor at the age of just 13, saving the lives of six people.

Check out our people from across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service wearing their team colours and starting that conversation to becoming a registered donor. 💬 ⚕️

We’re excited to officially celebrate the opening of the $53 million expansion of the Kirwan Health Campus, with the new facilities now up and running and caring for our community. 🎉🏥

The expansion brings maternity and oral health services together in modern, purpose-built facilities, including 15 maternity consultation rooms, dedicated ultrasound and procedure spaces, onsite pathology, 11 dental treatment rooms, advanced diagnostic imaging and new digital dentistry technology.

Mum-of-four Jemma Hall, who recently welcomed her fourth son through the maternity service, said having more care in one family-friendly location would make appointments easier for parents.

“Having the play area will make coming to appointments less stressful, especially for mums with toddlers; it makes it feel much less overwhelming,” Jemma said.

Director of midwifery Deanna Ward said the new clinic brought maternity care closer to women and families.

“It’s warm, it feels safe, and we’re just so excited to bring maternity services to our local community,” Deanna said.

Clinical director of oral health services Dr Joel Abraham said the new oral health clinic had been designed with both patient comfort and better care in mind.

“Dentistry can be an anxiety-ridden experience, so it’s really nice to have a facility that feels comfortable for both our patients and our staff,” Joel said.

Staff and friends from across the Townsville Hospital and Health Service came together yesterday to celebrate the annual Multicultural Day Celebration, and it was nothing short of spectacular 🌏

Over 100 staff and friends enjoyed a program of staff-led cultural performances, with songs, stories and dance performances from communities across the Pacific, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and South America.

Highlights included performances and presentations showcasing Filipino, Colombian, Nepali, Afghan, Singaporean, Sri Lankan Tamil and Myanmar culture, among many others.

The event closed with a spread of food and cultural displays showing off the diversity and culinary skills of our staff.

Thank you to everyone who shared their culture with us and made the event so special, and to those who make our health service community what it is! 💙

A big shoutout to our neonatal nurse practitioner Vicky Liashenko

She has recently won the 2026 Neonatal Nurse Excellence Award from the Australian College of Neonatal Nurses.

Ever since Vicky was a little girl all she has wanted to do is help sick babies get better and she has spent the past 20+ years doing that.

She was not only recognised for her more than two decades as a neonatal nurse, but also for her work in helping preterm babies breath easier at birth.

Townsville psychiatrist named state’s top supervisor 🏆💙

Townsville University Hospital psychiatrist and mental health service group acting chief training supervisor Dr Paula Matich has been named the best psychiatry supervisor in Queensland, taking out the 2026 Queensland Psychiatry Trainees Association Star Supervisor Award.

The award recognises psychiatrists and clinical educators who go above and beyond in supervising and training psychiatry registrars.

A James Cook University graduate, Dr Matich completed her entire medical training right here in Townsville.

"It was a great privilege and a surprise, but a very lovely surprise, to win the award," Paula said.

"I think winning the award is really a reflection of not only how we value supervision in Townsville and within the mental health service group, but also a reflection of our trainees."

One of her trainees and award nominators psychiatry registrar Dr Milla Jackson said Paula was the kind of supervisor every trainee hoped to have. 💙🩵

"Paula creates a safe environment where you feel supported to ask questions, make mistakes, build confidence and become the clinician you want to be," Milla said.

"She genuinely cares about the wellbeing of her trainees, makes time for them even when she is busy, and always makes you feel that you are never facing a difficult situation alone."

Cairns's musician Tim Wason is back on stage with his band The Pad Boys for this year's Cairns Festival, months after Townsville University Hospital surgeons removed a fist-sized tumour from his brain. 🎸

Tim was diagnosed with an aggressive form of head cancer in late February after a GP visit for an unrelated back issue led to the discovery.

"I collapsed at work late last year and had been following up with the GP about it," Tim said.

"During one of the follow-up appointments I mentioned I had been getting bad headaches for the last few months, and he referred me for an MRI.

"I got the results almost immediately and was rushed to Cairns Hospital, then flown to Townsville University Hospital a couple of days later for surgery.

They had found a tumour the size of a fist and, because of its size, it was putting pressure on my brain and nervous system."

Tim's partner Nicole Clark said the care from TUH staff made all the difference during a whirlwind few weeks.

"The care from the staff at TUH was amazing, they really looked after him, explained what was going on, and helped him through his treatment," Nicole said.

Radiation oncologist Dr Carmen Swanton, who treated Tim following his surgery, says his story is a reminder to not put off getting checked.

"If something doesn't feel right, and it's persistent and not getting better, it is important for people to go see their GP," Carmen said.
