Exercise Surfing Penguin commenced with rehearsals of emergency drills and SOPs in calm water before progressing to surf conditions at Rainbow Beach. The team have been learning how to read the surf to employ the LARCs and LCM8s effectively in complex conditions.
The training is challenging- the team are learning a lot of valuable lessons which will set them up well to provide support during the upcoming high risk weather season.

35 Water Transport Squadron deployed on Ex Sea WADER last week to Cowley Beach training area to practice amphibious operations.
The SQN HQ forms the Logistic Combat Element as part of the Australian Amphibious Force, with capabilities from across 17X and 2RAR attached to provide sustainment to the landing force. The Amphibious Beach Team had the opportunity to practice control of the beach and LCM8s practiced operating with the ship during the exercise. The new recovery vehicle was tested in an amphibious environment, demonstrating that it was highly capable.
The team are preparing now for high risk weather season training. The training will confirm readiness to support contingency operations and prepare for Operation Southern Discovery which will see them deploy to Macquarie Island in support of the Australian Antarctic Division.

Whilst 10 FSB (main) has deployed on Exercise AUROCH RUN 20, 1 Catering Company continues to provide concurrent enabling support to other elements across Army.

1 Catering Company is maximising its support to 7th Brigade - Australian Army Exercise DIAMOND CATALYST 20 by conducting parallel Force Modernisation activities.

Elements from 1 Platoon (Townsville) and 2 Platoon (Brisbane) are trialling a catering production detachment concept, whereby the production detachment is conducting the full range of fresh foodstuffs management tasks, including: receipt, inspection, bulk break, pre-preparation and re-consignment prior to distribution of pre-prepared foodstuffs to a catering section operating forward in SWBTA.

The trial will assess efficiency gains achieved by pre-preparing fresh rations such as meat, fruit and vegetables, and reducing unnecessary packaging in order to reduce supply chain volume moving forward, whilst reducing waste volume in the reverse supply chain. It will also assess the effectiveness of pre-preparation on catering operations within the forward catering section.

Trial outcomes will be utilised to inform future AACC force structure options.

Sea range practice!!
35 Water Transport Squadron conducted a 12.7mm M2HB Quick Change Barrel MG (.50 cal) sea range practice yesterday. The team from 71 (LCM8) Troop fired the LCM8 primary weapon system onto land targets, made particularly challenging by the constant movement of the boat on the water. The activity aims to confirm weapons training and coordination across multiple watercraft for the conduct of an amphibious landing in a threat environment.
The team got a lot of practice and ideas for how to progress training complexity for future practices.

One of the first deployments that the then newly formed 10 FSB was part of. A beautiful part of the world with great people.

21 years ago today, the first Australians from the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET) arrived in Dili to assist with the restoration of peace and security in the region.

What followed was the largest deployment of Australian troops since the Vietnam War, with 5,500 #YourADF personnel contributing to the 22 nation regional force.

Today, we say thank you to #OurPeople and their families for their support to the INTERFET mission.

We continue to support Timor-Leste and its people, and commemorate the courage, sacrifice and solidarity shown throughout our shared history. #GoodSoldiering

A Survey Team Heavy from the Littoral and Riverine Survey Squadron (LRSS), deployed to Spectacle Island, Sydney harbour, to conduct Exercise Harbour Swan 20.

The purpose of the activity was to test the deployable capability, whilst conducting infrastructure surveys of HMAS Penguin and Chowder Bay in support of Navy Infrastructure.

Spectacle Island was utilised as the base of operations for the two week activity, with the team conducting trade and continuation training on land and in the surrounding waters. The team conducted hydrographic, land and infrastructure surveys utilising the In-shore Hydrographic Survey Vessel (IHSV) and the Z Boat (remote operated watercraft). The specialist sensor systems collect large packets of data which is processed and analysed to support logistics over the shore and maritime mobility activities.

A special thanks to 145 Signal Squadron, who provided LRSS with the capability to transfer those large data sets to outstation based specialists.

4/12 Ammunition PL, 2 CSC established and operated a large ammunition Field Storage Area (FSA) in conjunction with 3 CSSB to support 3 BDE's Exercise Brolga Run.

During the activity, the PL supported the day to day issue & receipt for the exercise and conducted workshop tasks to prepare and reconfigure explosives and ammunition for use.

The FSA contained a large quantity of Explosive Ordnance (EO), totalling 260 pallets of various natures including those for 155mm Howitzer Artillery Guns and the M1A1 Abrams Battle Tanks.

The PL also conducted trade training for its own soldiers, as well as those from other 3 BDE units, to enhance the logistic and technical skill of the region's Ammunition Suppliers and Technicians. This included Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Disposal of Malfunctioned Explosive Ordnance (DMEO) scenarios and culminated with a Logistic Ammunition Disposal (LAD) range, seeing the explosive disposal of remaining unserviceable ordnance.

The Army Indigenous Development Program (AIDP) aims to give Indigenous Australians the best chance of success in Defence by helping participants meet entry education standards for Army.

But Private Shanika Murgha, from 3rd Brigade’s 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment, says the program is much more than that.

“The program is designed for Indigenous members to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills and their physical fitness, but it was also a really good way to get us used to the structure and culture of the Australian Army,” Private Murgha said.

“We got a lot of insight and a lot of knowledge, it was like having a little cheat sheet to take to our training at Kapooka.”

Growing up in Yarrabah in tropical North Queensland, Private Murgha found the move away from her family home challenging.

“When I enlisted it was the first time I’d actually left my home. It’s a small community and I’m very family orientated so it was really tough to leave but my family have backed me the whole way.

“They really encouraged me to go out and explore the world, to make something of myself.

As an Indigenous woman and soldier, for Private Murgha National Reconciliation Week is about celebrating the melting pot of culture within the Australian Defence Force.

“For me it is all about the recognition of culture in the Army and Defence, not only of Indigenous members but all people of colour. It’s about coming together and sharing not only our Army culture, but our individual cultures.

“It’s about bringing yourself to the table and letting people know ‘this is me, this is who I am’.”
