The team from Trafalgar CFA is stepping up once again for the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb in 2026.

For the past 8 years, Trafalgar has proudly had representatives take on the challenging climb, and this year welcomes both new and seasoned climbers to the annual event. Together, theyโ€™ll tackle the stairs in full firefighting gear to help raise vital funds and awareness for mental health support, cancer research, and emergency services charities.

The Stair Climb is more than just a physical challenge โ€” itโ€™s about mateship, resilience, and supporting those who protect our communities every day. Trafalgar CFA is proud to continue being part of this incredible event and thanks everyone who gets behind the team through donations, encouragement, and community support.

๐Ÿšจ Grass & Scrub Fire Response ๐Ÿšจ

Thursday 23 April, Trafalgar Fire Brigade responded to a grass and scrub fire along Thorpdaleโ€“Trafalgar Road. On arrival, crews quickly began attacking the main fire, while also responding to a smaller fire that had jumped the road - something not typically expected given today's conditions.

Working alongside our neighbours from P79, Thorpdale CFA and Yarragon Volunteer Fire Brigade, multiple tanker loads of water were deployed to contain the spreading fire. Despite our best efforts, changing conditions and factors beyond our control meant the fire could not be fully extinguished at the time.

As a result, you will likely see or smell smoke in the area. Please remain alert โ€” and if you see flames that are not from a controlled burn or adjacent burn off, act immediately and call 000.

It was disappointing to see a number of drivers continuing to speed past the scene, particularly given the windy conditions and active emergency response.

Please drive safely and support emergency crews working to protect the community.

Last nights brigade training focused on upskilling, maintaining skills, and building confidence across the crew.

We ran grass fire and bushfire scenarios, getting our newer members hands-on and putting their recently learned skills into action. It was great to see confidence building and teamwork really coming together.

We also gave our emerging leaders the opportunity to step up and have a go at crew leading and running the job, developing their decision-making, communication, and leadership skills in a supportive training environment.

Nights like this are key to keeping skills sharp, developing the next generation of leaders, and making sure weโ€™re ready for whatever comes our way. A productive night with plenty of learning โ€” and a bit of fun โ€” all round.๐Ÿš’

Trafalgar and Yarragon Fire Brigades were called to a grass and scrub fire on Sheehan Road, Yarragon just after noon on Friday.

After turning off the highway at Yarragon, the Trafalgar tanker could clearly see a good-sized plume of smoke, so the decision was made early to step things up. The response was escalated to five tankers, a Big Fill pump and two Field Command Vehicles.

Once on scene, the Trafalgar tanker went straight to work on the head of the fire to stop it from spreading any further. Yarragonโ€™s Pumper Tanker and Tanker arrived shortly after, along with a council grader and water cart, which did a great job putting in containment lines around the fireground.

We were then joined by tankers from Warragul, Darnum Ellinbank and Willow Grove, and with everyone working together the fire was brought under control quickly and efficiently. Crews then spent time blacking out remaining hot spots. The response was backed up by Nilma Northโ€™s Big Fill unit and the Moe and Warragul Field Command Vehicles.

Firefighter wellbeing is always important to us, and after close to three hours of hard work in hot, challenging conditions, it was good to see crews from other brigades able to cool off in their air-conditioned appliances. Unfortunately, with our tanker now 29 years old, that wasnโ€™t an option for the Trafalgar crew.
