Ostlers House

Ostlers House Ostlers House is a small brick building, built in the 1800's. It is located to the west of Ryan's Hotel, 171 Kay Street, Traralgon.

It comprises of a single room. The roof is gabled and teh walls are constructed of red brick patterned with brown header bricks. In 1858, Duncan Campbell built the Travellers Rest Hotel, on the current Ryan's Hotel site. It served our community as a post office, store, church, court house and community centre. In 1914, the original hotel was pulled down and rebuilt as the Traralgon Hotel, now know

n as Ryan’s Hotel. The Ostlers House remains at the back of the existing hotel. Whilst we are unsure of the exact date that it was built, it definitely pre-dates Ryan's Hotel, and was most likely built at around the same time as the original Traveller's Rest Hotel. The term Ostlers refers to people who look after horses, and logically, it would have most likely been built before trains came through Gippsland, which was in the 1870's. The Traralgon Historical Society is in possession of a photograph of the "Ostlers House" with Registration Number 10334. Written underneath the photograph is "built before 1893". There is an Application in place by the current owners to demolish this lovely old piece of Traralgon's history. They have submitted a report to Council from a Building Surveyor/Engineer, who has indicated that the building is damaged beyond repair. This is in direct conflict with the Latrobe City Heritage Study, completed in 2007, which states on page 397, "the overall condition of the building is good". Objections had to be submitted by 10th August 2012, and a number of organisations and individuals have lodged objections. We will keep you informed of the progress of this matter on this page.

I'm up for sale... you'll have to also purchase the rest of the property too! Hopefully my new owner will love me.

GREAT NEWS: VCAT have upheld Council's decision to reject the owner's application to demolish Ostlers House! This is great news for the community, as this is believed to be Traralgon's oldest brick building still standing!

17/10/2013

VCAT Hearing ran for 1.5 days. Now we wait for a decision to see if the Little Ostlers House will be saved.

WELL, 16th October IS "D DAY" FOR ME... My owners are going to VCAT to try to overturn the previous decision not to let me be demolished :-( They've armed themselves with lawyers and 3 x "expert reports" that will try to say that I'm not worth saving. I'm only little, I don't take up much space (only about one car spot), but I'm a very significant piece of Traralgon's history. Please wish me luck.

Today was the last day for lodging an objection to the owners VCAT Appeal. We haven't been advised of a hearing date yet, but I guess it won't be long now! Hang in there little Ostlers House, the community loves you!

The owners of Ostlers House have appealed Council's decision to oppose the demolition of this lovely little old building. I am not yet aware of the date of the VCAT Hearing, however, it is a requirement of Council to inform all official objectors, and I will be following this up tomorrow morning, and will then confirm the hearing date.

Mediation was held last night, between formal objectors, the owners and Council. It was a polite meeting, where we all ended up agreeing to disagree, regarding the future of Ostlers House. It will now have to go to a full Council Meeting, as it was obvious that it couldn't be resolved at mediation. The process was fair and well chaired by Kellie O'Callaghan. Ostlers House lives to see another day (for now!). Like our page to stay up to date with the latest news on the fate of this lovely little workers building.
