📌 What you need to know before tackling the famous 1000 Steps Walk.

The Kokoda Track Memorial Walk or 1000 Steps Walk is one of Melbourne's most popular bushwalks. It can get very busy on weekends and holidays.

Help us protect this beautiful part of Victoria, located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people, by:

✅ Staying on the paths to protect the native plants and animals
✅ Following the marked, one-way direction to improve safety on the narrow steps
✅ Bringing a reusable water bottle to take home with you. National parks do not have rubbish bins.
✅ Avoiding visiting in peak times eg. weekends 9am-2pm
✅ Choosing another local walk if the car park is full - do not park illegally

The Dandenong Ranges' Kokoda Track Memorial Walk – the famous 1000 Steps on Wurundjeri Country – officially reopened for walkers on Monday the 3 October 2022 by Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio.

The popular track was closed in June 2021 following major storms which caused damage across Victoria, with Dandenong Ranges National Park, including the 1000 Steps, among the hardest hit.

Thanks to the hard work in challenging terrain by Parks Victoria staff, Earth and Environment Constructions contractors, and many others, walkers can get back to the challenge.

We encourage you to help us protect this beautiful part of Victoria, located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri people:

✔️Stay on the paths to protect the native plants and animals
✔️Follow the marked, one-way direction to improve safety on the narrow steps
✔️Bring a reusable water bottle to take home with you. National parks do not have rubbish bins.
✔️Avoid peak times to visit; eg. weekends 9am-2pm
✔️If the car park is full do not park illegally, chose from one of many other local walks

☝️ Always check the Victorian Emergency App for up-to-date warnings and advice

We look forward to seeing you get safely into nature at the 1000 steps 😊👟

⚠️ 1,000 Steps is closed for repairs ⚠️

The track suffered significant damage last year during a powerful storm, with parts of the track needing construction works to be rebuilt. Because of this, the track is not safe for bushwalking visitors.

We're continuing to work hard to restore access to the track, subject to it being deemed safe for hikers and visitors.

As the whole track is closed for works, you can visit these alternative experiences to the 1000 Steps:
👉 The nearby Lyrebird Track is available as a two-way walking trail up the mountain.
👉 The area’s visitor site is also open including the car park and onsite café, as well as the picnic area at the top of the walk at One Tree Hill.

We appreciate your patience during this time. If you'd like to keep up-to-date with park closures, please visit https://fal.cn/3rm13
