In NSW, smoke alarm compliance is regulated by the Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment (Smoke Alarms) Regulation 2006 and the Residential Tenancies Act 2010.

What does this mean for the landlord - The legislation requires the landlord to ensure proper installation, testing and maintenance of smoke alarms in properties in which persons sleep. 🏠

Annual Testing - It is perfectly legal for landlords to maintain their own smoke alarms. However, due to the complexity and various legislative requirements, it is highly recommended to have your smoke alarms inspected by a trained compliance specialist. 👨🏼‍🔧
