Think it won’t happen to you? Lithium-ion batteries can catch fire without warning. Handle these batteries the wrong way and your tools, forklifts or e-bikes are gone. Always charge, store and handle batteries safely to prevent serious health and safety risks. Read up and reduce the risks: https:/...

Have you ever considered what you would do NOW if a fire broke out in your home? It's pretty scary, eh, particularly if you don't have the tools to extinguish it.

Why is it that at work we have extinguishers, get them serviced, and train staff to use them, but then go home to our most prized possession and don't behave the same?

At work, your boss is obligated to keep you safe under the WHS Act, but this does not apply at home.

As a result, we don't seem to apply the same rules at home, but fire at work and at home need the same three things to start: fuel, oxygen, and heat.

We encourage you to consider the risk of ignition in the home, as the potential for a fire at home is much higher.

If you don't have a fire extinguisher or blanket, we encourage you to get them and install them.

Ensure they are at least 1 metre from any cooktops and are easily accessible in case of a fire.

If you already have an extinguisher and blanket, get them out of the cupboard and install them somewhere safe and obvious.

If you've had them for more than one year, remove from the holder, turn upside down and give a little shake, avoiding the handle. This helps keep the powder loose and ready for use.

It would be terrific if you could share these tips with friends and loved ones; it might just save a life.

Lithium battery fires are extremely hot, produce significant toxic smoke and are near impossible to extinguish with conventional methods. They are very dangerous, and the only safe option is to evacuate the area.

Do you know how many times I have seen this, particulary on renovated buildings that I have been asked to certify. It might be effective, but remove it after work is completed and before going to bed.

Is a fire door an exit door? Well, in most cases, an exit door is not a fire door. A fire door is designed to ensure fire separation between compartments when there is an opening, whereas an exit door is designed to allow people to pass through the opening to an exit. For example, a door into your unit is fire-rated, whereas the exit door from the metal-clad factory is not. I hope this helps clear this up a bit. If you have any questions regarding the compliance of your fire and exit doors, get in touch
