INVERTED VEHICLE RESCUE TRAINING 🚨

Tonight, NSW SES Tumut Unit members trained in advanced Road Crash Rescue techniques involving an inverted vehicle with two trapped casualties suspended upside down in their seatbelts.

The exercise focused on safe stabilisation, casualty access and complex extrication techniques from both the front and rear of the vehicle while working in a controlled but realistic environment. Members used a range of rescue methods and hydraulic equipment to safely remove both patients while maintaining scene safety and teamwork throughout the operation.

Training scenarios like this are critical for maintaining capability and ensuring our volunteers are prepared for real-world incidents across our community.

A great night of hands-on learning, communication and problem solving by all involved.

Over the past few months, the NSW SES Tumut Unit has continued building its capabilities and strengthening the skills of our local volunteers.

We’re proud to congratulate two members who have recently qualified as Vertical Rescue Operators, along with several others who have completed training in Map and Navigation, Alpine Support and Flood Rescue (Land Based).

These courses take commitment, teamwork and many hours of training, and it’s great to see our members continuing to step up to support the community in all kinds of emergencies.

Behind every callout is a team of everyday locals giving up their time to help others — whether that’s out in the field, supporting searches, helping coordinate incidents, maintaining equipment, preparing catering, or simply being there when the community needs it most.

The SES isn’t just about storms and rescues — it’s about mateship, learning new skills, and being part of something that genuinely helps people.

We’re always looking for new members. Whether you want to get out on the tools, help with equipment and logistics, support the Incident Control Centre, assist with catering, or just lend a hand where needed, there’s a place for everyone in the unit.

If you’ve ever thought about joining, now’s a great time. Send us a message or comment below to find out more

Overnight Land Search Shows the Dedication of SES Volunteers

At approximately 8:00 pm last night, 2 May, NSW SES Tumut Unit, alongside other NSW SES units, was requested to assist NSW Police with a land search for an elderly man who had gone missing while bushwalking.

With support from NSW SES volunteers from Khancoban and Wagga Wagga, crews responded to assist with the search and rescue operation.

The first arriving Tumut SES crew liaised with NSW Police, and with the assistance of NSW Police PolAir, the missing bushwalker’s location was identified.

Four Tumut SES volunteers, alongside a NSW Police officer, then made their way to the patient’s location.

Using a range of map and navigation skills, and after approximately 2 km of traversing dense bushland and partly along a track, volunteers were able to make contact with the man.

Due to the difficult terrain, crews used 60 metres of hand line to safely scramble down to his location before assisting with his extrication back to the command post.

Crews completed the job at around 3:00 am.

Thankfully, the man was located safe and well and was cleared by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

This incident highlights the diverse work NSW SES volunteers undertake, as well as the commitment of local volunteers who give up their nights, leave their families and work alongside other emergency services to help people in need.

The NSW SES is more than storms and floods.

Our volunteers are trained in a wide range of skills and play an important role in supporting our community during emergencies.

If you have ever thought about volunteering, learning new skills and being part of a dedicated team, now is a great time to join. We have roles for every skill you can bring, including catering, logistics, equipment maintenance, fleet management and outdoor field skills too.

Volunteers are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
