It’s National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June), and at Helping Hands, we’re for reconciliation.

What does it mean to be ‘All In’?

Across our organisation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and non-Aboriginal staff work together side by side. We’re united by our purpose to support people, strengthen communities and create a better future for people and planet.

We’re stronger because of the knowledge, experience and leadership Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people bring to our work.

But being ‘All In’ means recognising that reconciliation is not something that sits with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people alone – it belongs to all of us, and it requires consistent action.

It means being honest about what we’re doing well, where we can keep improving, and how we can keep moving forward with care and respect.

This week, join us in taking time to pause, learn and think about how we keep walking together toward reconciliation — this week, and every day.

🧹Domestic cleaning: vacuuming, mopping, dusting, washing, hanging and folding the laundry, bathroom cleaning, dishwashing, tidying, making the bed, and more.

👕 Personal & respite care (including sleepovers): shower and bathroom support, dressing, and medication prompts.

🍽️ Meal preparation: helping you prepare and cook your weekly meals.

🏡 We all want to stay independent for as long as possible – but sometimes, a little support can help you maintain independence and make life easier and more enjoyable!

If you’ve been finding certain tasks a bit more challenging lately, you’re not alone. Some signs that extra help could make a difference include:

🔹 Household tasks feeling harder than they used to – like cleaning, shopping or cooking meals
🔹 Finding it tricky to get up and about – whether it’s steps, showers or moving around the house
🔹 Forgetting little things more often – like appointments, phone calls or where things are

🌹 Local Anzac Day Services 2026 🌹 As Anzac Day approaches, we take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our Veterans — and to honour the legacy of service that continues in our community today.

The Helping Hands team will be attending local services to honour our Veterans, including the Forster-Tuncurry service:

🌹 Dawn service - 6:00am
Lone Pine Memorial Park

🌹 March service - 10:30am
Assemble at Parkes Street, Tuncurry and march toward Lone Pine Memorial Park

🎖️What is Veterans’ Home Care — and who is it for? 🧹 Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) is a government-funded program that provides practical, everyday support to help eligible veterans continue living independently at home 🏡

Support can include:
🧼 Household cleaning and shopping
🚿 Personal care (like showering and dressing)
🌿 Lawn mowing and basic home maintenance
🤝 Respite care to support carers

Who is eligible and how to access:
🎖️ Veterans with a DVA Gold Card
📄 Veterans with a White Card (for a service-related condition)
👨‍👩‍👧 Support also available for carers
📞 Accessed through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, with services delivered by approved providers like Helping Hands
