Many thanks to the brigades, locals and the brilliant chopper who helped us control and put out this fire behind Dundurrabin today.

This is a classic example of why we remind you to prepare your fire plan - this fire started after a tree fell on a live power line. Gusty winds and drying fuel meant this fire moved quickly - in this case, it could have threatened multiple homes in Dundurrabin village.

Today, that wasn't the case, thankfully - but it serves a sobering reminder not only that fire season is well underway, but fire can present itself at unexpected moments.

Fire danger ratings drop for the remainder of the week (with hopefully some rain) but all it takes is a bit of dry weather for the danger to increase again.
Remember your fire plan, you might need to use it tomorrow!

Our fire danger today is Extreme - this means that if a fire starts, it can become dangerous VERY quickly. Not a surprise after our string of drier weather and the winds around up here.

A total fire ban is in place in our area, which means no fires outside, at all.

Now's a great time to review your fire plan and decide what you'd do if a fire starts. If you're going to leave, the safest choice is to leave early. You can find resources about preparing for bushfire on the RFS website:
https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/resources/bush-fire-survival-plan

A Total Fire Ban is now in force for the Far North Coast, North Coast, New England and Northern Slopes. Hot, dry and windy conditions are forecast today across parts of the state, increasing the fire danger.

Know your fire risk and what you will do if fire threatens. Report all unattended fires to Triple Zero (000).

For more information on Total Fire Ban rules, visit the website: https://brnw.ch/21wWWVo

Today's (6th Oct) Fire Danger Rating in the Clarence Valley Area is HIGH. Our neighbours in the North Coast area (Dorrigo/Bellingen/Coffs) are under a total fire ban with an EXTREME fire danger.

Fire activity has been increasing in our area over the past week or so and with warming temps and wind fires can easily get out of hand. Be aware of the conditions and remember to call 000 if you see an unattended fire.

To find out what area you fall under and more info on fire danger ratings, see https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans

Fire Permits are now required from 1st October 2025. Permits are required until the end of the bush fire danger period – generally from now until 1st April next year.

There are 2 ways to obtain a fire permit from the RFS:

1. You can apply for your fire permit online on the RFS website at https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp , or,
2. You can contact one of our fire permit officers to get a paper permit - the process is the same as before.

We are encouraging people to use the online option if possible, to save everyone time and double-handling of paper permits. Lodging an online permit is quite simple and straightforward.

The only part of the process which can be a bit confusing is when you are asked: ‘What is the purpose of the burn?”, so to make it easy, follow these steps (this part has recently changed, but it's still pretty simple):

1. If you ARE a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn grass for a fallow or burn grass for pasture regeneration, you need to select “Agriculture”, and then in the “Sub category” box, select “Pasture regeneration”. These permits can only be issued for up to 7 days.

2. If you ARE a farmer or working on a farm and want to burn piles of timber or vegetation, you need to select “Agriculture” and then in the “Sub category” box, scroll down and select the most appropriate reason (eg. Vegetation - Pile Burns) from the various options. These permits can only be issued for up to 21 days.

3. If you are NOT a farmer and want to burn piles of timber or vegetation, you need to select “Other” and then in the “Sub category” box, scroll down and select the most appropriate reason for what you are doing from the various options. Again, these permits can only be issued for up to 21 days.

4. The “Hazard Reduction” option generally won’t apply to most private landowners.

Please indicate clearly what you are planning to do in the section which asks: "Provide more information on what you are planning to burn". If you upload photos of the area you intend to burn, and/or provide a clear description of what you intend to do, this will generally remove the need for a site visit and will make it simpler and quicker for us to approve.

After you have lodged your online permit request, one of our permit officers will review it, and as with the traditional paper permit, may contact you to ask for more information or to visit the site of the proposed burn.

Your permit will be approved electronically by the permit officer and then a copy will be sent to you by email, please read and follow the conditions on the permit carefully.

Importantly, after your permit has been approved and issued, you also then need to give 24 hours notice to all your neighbours and the RFS before you light any fires.

To notify the RFS, again go to https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp and fill in the simple “Notify us of your planned burn” form. You can also call 02 6644 5127 to notify the RFS.

Remember to check your BOM Weather app for the forecast fire danger ratings (Moderate, High, Extreme or Catastrophic), and the forecast weather conditions generally for the upcoming days before you light up. Generally fire permits will be suspended when fire danger ratings are High or above.

If in doubt, don't light it up. If the weather isn't suitable to burn during the period of your permit, simply apply for another permit. Please don't burn if it's not safe to do so.

From time to time, permits may be suspended temporarily by the RFS due to adverse weather conditions, please do not light any fires during this time.

If you have any other queries, please contact one of our local permit officers or the Clarence Valley District RFS office on 02 6644 5135.

Due to the favourable wet conditions we've had over the past few months, as from Monday 17th February 2025, the Bush Fire Danger period will end (6 weeks earlier than usual), in the Clarence Valley Council area. This period will extend through until 1st September 2025 (unless announced otherwise by the NSW RFS).

This means that from 17th February until 1st September 2025, any pile burning or fallow burning on your property will not require a fire permit. However, as is the case year round, you still need to do the following before you light up:
1. At least 24 hours before lighting a fire, you must notify the RFS on (02) 6644 5127, or search "Notify RFS" online, or click the link to: https://nswrfsprod.service-now.com/guardian_csp?id=guardian_cat_item&sys_id=9e19819bc361f1d04a9cdc31150131ad, and
2. At least 24 hours before lighting a fire you must notify all your adjoining neighbours, and
3. You must take all reasonable precautions to prevent the fire from escaping your property. Before lighting the fire you should: check the weather forecast; clear around the burn area; have sufficient people, equipment and water available to monitor & manage the fire, and
4. If your fire gets out of control, please immediately call 000 and ask for Fire.
Fines and prosecutions may apply if you light a fire and don't complete the steps above.
The BOM Weather phone app now has the forecast Fire Danger Rating on the daily forecast for the 3-4 days ahead.

This weekend is officially RFS Get Ready weekend - where everyone is encouraged to review their fire safety plan, check any firefighting equipment, and do cleanups to remove fire hazards from around their properties. We're already seeing an uptick in fires in our local area so it's the perfect time to get ready.

Next weekend, Sun 29th September, our volunteers will be at Dundurrabin Community Centre with other emergency service volunteers - so if you have any questions about how you can prepare for bush fire, please come say hello!

If you can't make it to an event, you can make and review a fire plan using the RFS' handy tool at https://www.myfireplan.com.au/

The Fire Danger forecast for Thursday 19/09/24 across the Clarence Valley is HIGH Fire Danger Rating. Conditions are expected to ease again from Friday 20/09/24.
Fire Permits for Thurs 19/09/24 are NOT SUSPENDED in the Clarence Valley, however with warm and windy conditions expected, we are asking landholders to hold off from conducting any non essential burning and to monitor any recent burns to ensure they are completely extinguished.
Despite the recent rains, the warmer weather is beginning to dry out the bush and grasslands, making them increasingly fire prone. It's important you and your family are prepared and know what you'll do if threatened by fire. For more information, visit the RFS website: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
