Not sure which ag tech is worth your time? AgValuate can help.

The Farmacist FNQ team is working with the to deliver the AgValuate program.

Agvaluate was developed by the Drought Hub in collaboration with farmers to help make sense of the wide world of ag technology and figure out the best fits for each farm business. Whether you are just beginning to explore digital technologies or looking to enhance existing tech, AgValuate provides insights that matter to your operation.

Once you finish the AgValuate online survey, you get a report that sorts opportunities into Quick Wins and Longer Term options based on your readiness to adopt technology and your own interests and priorities.

You don’t have to do it alone. Our team can sit with you while you complete the survey, work through your report afterwards and support you to connect with suppliers or other organisations based on your priorities.

Could Solar Radiation Be Playing a Bigger Role Than We Realise?
There has been plenty of discussion around the district in recent weeks about yields feeling a bit lighter than expected for this time of year. Whenever this happens, it's natural to look at the things we can influence – nutrition, irrigation, varieties, pests and soil constraints. All of these factors are important. However, one of the fundamental drivers of crop production is something we have absolutely no control over – sunlight.
Sugarcane is often described as a solar-powered crop. As a C4 plant, it is exceptionally efficient at converting sunlight into biomass and sugar. Simply put, solar radiation is the energy source that drives photosynthesis. Without it, the crop cannot manufacture tonnes, regardless of how well other parts of the system are managed.
When reviewing Bureau of Meteorology solar radiation data for the Burdekin, we noticed that the district experienced a period of below-average solar radiation from December through to February compared with the 10-year average. This timing caught our attention because it coincides with a period when cane is actively accumulating biomass and building yield potential.
Does this explain every paddock and every yield result this season? Certainly not. Farming systems are complex, and crop performance is always the result of many interacting factors. However, the data is a useful reminder that environmental conditions can influence production in ways that are sometimes easy to overlook. As harvest progresses, it raises an interesting question: How much does seasonal variation in sunlight contribute to the differences we see in crop performance from year to year?

Welcome Jose Marra to our FNQ team! Jose studied agriculture in Brazil and has worked in Australian agriculture in South Australia, Victoria and Far North Queensland. Jose enjoys spatial agronomy and working with farmers to improve productivity. Since joining the team he has helped with implementing and bio-massing trials, been out and about soil sampling, and is learning how to update nutrient plans with farmers. It takes time to get to the know a region and it's farmers, so if you see Jose around, say hello!
