On the mid north coast of New South Wales in the local government areas of Port Macquarie-Hastings, Kempsey, Greater Taree, Gloucester, Northern Great Lakes, Stroud and Dungog, thousands of native animals come into strife each year for a variety of reasons. We have a very caring community who want to help these animals but don't know what to do for them. (NSW) Inc. (For Australian Wildlife Needing

Aid) is a network of volunteers, trained and willing to help these animals. Joining a group like FAWNA gives you the training and the confidence to learn the tried and true ways to rescue, rehabilitate and release injured, orphaned and disadvantaged native animals. Membership of a group like FAWNA is a great way to give back to your community and meet like-minded people who care about the plight of the individual animal, so often harmed by man's interference in some way. Loss of habitat, motor vehicles, harm from domestic pets, fences, or pollution are just a few of the many causes why fauna needs our help.

Discarded fishing tackle is an ongoing lethal threat to our wildlife, with nylon fishing line not decomposing for 500 years and stainless steel hooks for 50. A very large proportion of FAWNA's rescues are seabirds entangled with fishing line, usually with horrific and sadly sometimes fatal injuries.
So we are always, always grateful to people who collect and correctly dispose of discarded fishing tackle. Hence this very special thanks to Annie and Linc of Manning River Ferries, for going far and beyond to collect & remove these lethal threats from our waterways.

In honour of World Environment Day, we bring you the super-pollinator of our forests without whom fruiting and flowering trees, including koala food trees, would disappear.
Drum roll please!- Australia's Flying-foxes.
Flying-foxes are listed as a Vulnerable Species, with habitat loss and warming climate the major drivers of their population decline. Each year FAWNA rescues, cares for and then releases many Flying-foxes orphaned by heat stress and other climate impacts.
Others are caught on barbed wire fences and inappropriate netting often with horrific injuries.

People might remember the post earlier in May about the pelican rescued at Manning Pt with the badly torn pouch. He was captured, treated and then re-released. He's doing well, more recently sighted at Harrington, where he readily approached his previous rescuer, clearly bearing no ill-will.
