It seems like we are in for a wet weekend!
Make sure you’re following advice from the Bureau of Meteorology and heeding warnings 💦

Here’s the updated Flood Watch area in South Australia. This image shows just how much of the state is covered in the Bureau of Meteorology Flood Watch issued today.

Yep, that’s right, pretty much the whole state! So, it’s important for all of us to be prepared.

The highest rainfall totals are forecast over North East Pastoral district during today. However, rainfall is forecast to extend southwards from Friday and over the weekend. Accumulated rainfall totals will be significant.

What can you do to be prepared and stay safe?
> Where it is safe to do so, clear gutters, downpipes and drains to prevent water damage to your home or property
> Check whether you need sandbags. If your property is prone to flooding, SES sandbag pod locations are listed on the SES website: https://www.ses.sa.gov.au/incidents-and-warnings/about-sa-ses-sandbag-locations
> Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater.
> Keep children well away from floodwater, creeks and storm drains.
> If you’re travelling, ensure you have adequate food and water for the trip. Visit the South Australia Police website for more information about holiday and remote travel safety: www.police.sa.gov.au/your-safety/crime-prevention-and-security/holiday-and-remote-travel-safety
> Take extra care, drive to the conditions, and adhere to road closures. You can check road closures via SA Infrastructure and Transport TrafficSA website: www.traffic.sa.gov.au
> Check on friends, family and neighbours during and after this rain event to ensure they’re safe and doing OK

🚨 Hermitage CFS Siren – What It Means 🚨

Our Hermitage CFS brigade maintains and funds the upkeep of our local siren ourselves as part of our commitment to community safety. The siren is tested every Tuesday at 7:00pm for one cycle, which is routine and helps ensure it is working correctly when needed 📢

If the siren sounds for longer than a single cycle, or at any time outside of the Tuesday test, it means the brigade is responding to a grassfire or incident that may pose a potential threat to the safety and lives of our community. This is a cue for residents to stay alert and seek further information from credible sources such as the AlertSA App, the CFS website, or ABC Radio 891 (the official emergency broadcaster) 📻

Importantly, the siren is an additional local warning tool and should not be relied upon as your only source of emergency information. Always have multiple ways to receive warnings and updates so you can make informed and timely decisions to keep yourself and your loved ones safe 👨🏻‍🚒

Today, we pause to reflect on one of South Australia’s deadliest bushfires, the Ash Wednesday Fires of February 16, 1983.

We remember those who lost their homes, their livelihoods, and those who lost their lives.

How does your property stack up❓

How wide is your driveway? How low are the overhanging trees? Can we turn around at the end? Do you have a swimming pool, or rainwater tanks? What is your plan in the event of a fire? 🔥

These are all very useful things for us to know, so that we can better respond to an emergency in the area, or indeed at your property 🏡

We are the primary response brigade for suburbs from Upper and Lower Hermitage, to parts of Houghton, Inglewood, Yatala Vale and Gould Creek 🗺️

If you’re in our response zone and you’d like us to come and check out your property, get in touch with us today!

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes when you phone 000? ☎️

When you phone 000, Adelaide Fire will take the call and dispatch our brigade accordingly. The pagers and BART Applications on the smart phones of all members of our brigade will sound with the incident type, location, and which trucks are required 🚒

If the member can respond, they will “thumbs up” and make their way to the station. At the same time, the Brigade Duty Officer will acknowledge the page with Adelaide Fire 👍🏼

The first member at the station will open the station doors and prepare the trucks after donning their personal protective equipment. Depending on the type of incident and the time of day, we may add additional equipment to the truck such as additional flood lights 💡 pumps and sandbags (for flooding) 💦 or additional chainsaws (for large tree downs) 🌳

Once all the crew has arrived at the station, we are then on our way! 🏃

Want to find our more? Visit the Station on a training night, Tuesdays between 1830-1930 to meet the crew and check out our trucks!
