We shall remember them. To our scouts and our leaders, to those who returned, and those who did not. All have contributed in their way. In particular is Lieutenant Bob Monteith, 26th Battalion AIF, who – although never a scout – will never know his contributions to future scouts. From his parents, the memorial fund in his name allowed the purchase of Eprapah, Queensland's leader training centre; and today the long-time scout training centre in environmental education.

For those in the south-east corner of the State this Saturday, please share with us in the Scouting life of retired BC (Env Ed) Judy SEYMOUR, at the Eprapah Scout Environment Education Centre (424 Cleveland–Redland Bay Road). We meet at Mungara at 2.30 pm, on Saturday 16 September 2023, to view memorabilia, and an afternoon tea, before proceeding to the chapel with the family with a memorial plaque.

Judy commenced her Scouting in 1955 as an Assistant Lady Cub Master in New Zealand for two years, and in 1981 she returned to Scouting as an Assistant Cub Leader with Redcliffe Scout Group.

Judy was always interested in the environment and the Eprapah Environmental Education Centre. She was appointed Branch Commissioner for Environmental Education in 2000 to 2015 when she changed role to Branch Advisor Chaplaincy Support whilst remaining as a member of the Eprapah Scout Fellowship.

Judy is also fondly remembered for the Story Telling Workshops that she initiated and ran for Leaders. Judy gave 43 years active service to Scouting. Her knowledge and passion for Scouting and the environment has been shared through the teams she established, led and supported to promote environmental education.

In 2015 her service was recognised when she was awarded the Silver Kangaroo.

Bear* with us. A UQ PhD student is seeking to understand the behavioural intentions of people within south-east Queensland to promote positive and effective koala conservation. Have your input – for Rovers, leaders, adult helpers, and the greater community.

Newly discovered butterfly found by Queensland Joey Scout, April Philips (age 6). The Apriliust Plexippus, named after its discoverer, was found during the Joey Scout’s ‘Adventurous Journey’ working towards her Special Interest Area Badge.

“When I saw the butterfly, I was so excited I nearly squashed it,” tells April, “I love all the colours!”

Adding to Queensland’s unique flora and fauna, this discovery has shocked the scientific world. Professor Tonto from AFD University explains, “It’s surprising to see such a mix of colours on an insect like this, I can’t believe it has gone unnoticed for so long.”

April is excited to share this discovery with her friends at Scouts, saying, “I think the whole group will like it, my butterfly has all our section colours on its wings.”

On this day, in 1931... The ruddy light of camp fires lit up the faces of hundreds of Scouters and Guiders at Eprapah, the Queensland Scouts' training ground, near Redland Bay, last night, when they entertained the World Chief Scout (Lord Baden-Powell) and Lady Baden-Powell, who were accompanied by the State Chief Scout, his Excellency the Governor (Lieutenant-General Sir John Goodwin). It was a happy informal function without undue ceremonial. About 180 Scouters and 200 Guiders were present, and they accorded the Chiefs a rousing reception as they reached the grounds shortly after 7 o'clock. Scouters, Rovers, Men Scouts, and Veteran Scouts seated themselves in a horseshoe formation, and the official party occupied the opening. The Guides entertained the Chief Guide in an adjoining area. The Chiefs refrained from speeches, but entertained the gathering with Scout "yarns." The Gilwell Park Troop Council circle led the Scouters in a happy camp-fire sing-song. At 8.30 o'clock the Chiefs and staffs left to the accompaniment of cheering from Scouters and Guiders, who escorted the party to the main gate. Miss A. Adamson, during the evening, was presented with a Scouts' Thanks Badge by the World Chief Scout, in recognition of her services at headquarters.

Today Redland Bay Road is a four lane major road, and a barrier and danger to animals. We look back at when Eprapah was first purchased for scout leader training in April 1928, and we can see the rural nature of this agricultural food bowl.
