Earlier this month, our Sustainable Agriculture team hosted its very first Hackathon, and what a success it was! 🎉

More than 70 students from the University of Sydney and Charles Sturt University came together to tackle a real-world agricultural challenge alongside industry experts.

💡 The challenge? What are the development opportunities for a biofuel industry within the .

Students worked in teams to think creatively, solve problems, and develop innovative ideas for the future of agriculture in our region.

With support from mentors across industry and government, students explored ideas including:
🌱 higher oil-content canola varieties
🤝 building a Riverina biofuels network
♻️ using existing resources to support biofuel development
🚜 innovative ways to strengthen sustainable fuel production.

A huge thank you to our mentors and partners from Grains Research and Development Corporation, Riverina Oils, Just Biodiesel, RMS, AgRenew and staff from Local Land Services, for sharing their expertise and helping inspire the next generation of ag leaders.

🚚 Selling sheep or goats that weren’t born on your property? Here’s what to remember... 🐑🐐

When completing your NVD (National Vendor Declaration), make sure your tagging details are spot‑on 👇

If the animals have visual NLIS tags either:
• apply a pink post‑breeder tag/eID, or
• list the PICs from each ear tag on your NVD.

If the animals already have an eID device:
• simply list the number of head with eID devices on the NVD
• no need to apply another eID device
• no need to record their individual PICs. ✔️

And remember - only ONE eID device per animal.

Our staff have been out on the ground supporting landholders to coordinate rabbit control across the region, helping tackle a pest that causes significant damage to farms and the environment.

These photos show active rabbit warrens and baiting works in action (rabbits attracted to carrot lines), highlighting just how widespread and persistent these pests can be.

Wild rabbits:
👉 damage crops and pastures
👉 create heavy grazing pressure
👉 cause soil erosion and loss of topsoil
👉 impact native vegetation and local ecosystems
👉 compete with livestock and native animals.

🐾 Rabbit control is a shared responsibility. Under the General Biosecurity Duty, landholders are required to reduce the risks posed by pest animals like rabbits.

Effective control includes:
👉 coordinated baiting and shooting programs
👉 destroying warrens and harbour sites
👉 managing vegetation and shelter areas
👉 working with neighbours and local programs.
