🚨Building fire🚨

At 3:40am, on Thursday morning, Fire and Rescue NSW received a triple zero call (000) to Wagga Bar alight in Baylis Street.

Before arrival, crews noticed a large amount of smoke and red glow in the distance, prompting the addition of more resources.

On arrival, crews were faced with a large commercial single story building well alight, threatening two adjoining premises.

Working immediately commenced with hand lines to prevent spread, and the aerial ladder was raised to help extinguish the fire from above.

After approximately 30 minutes, the roof of the building collapsed, this proved difficult for ground crews as they were forced to fight the fire externally.

The use of the aerial ladder was very effective, reaching areas that crews were not able to access due to the roof collapse.

After several hours of firefighting operations, the fire was extinguished and handed over to police.

Thankfully, all buildings were unoccupied and there were no injuries.

🧑🏼‍🚒Drill Night🧑🏼‍🚒

On Monday night, our retained and permanent crews came together for a combined drill night, providing a great opportunity to train together and share knowledge.

This weeks drill crew participated in aerial appliance operations. Our crews discussed the appliance’s specifications, capabilities and the safe operation of the appliance.

🚒 Aerial Ladder Operations

Crews raised the aerial ladder and explored the different working angles and positions it can operate at. This provided knowledge to crews in understanding the appliance’s capabilities and the importance of operating it safely and effectively.

💦 Water Monitor

Crews looked at the water monitor mounted to the front of the ladder, they discussed how it operates and how it can be used effectively when tackling incidents from an elevated position.

⚙️ Pumping operations

Crew discussed how to effectively manage water supply. They also talked about how much water is needed to supply the appliance when pumping water through the ladder, as it can use up to 5000 litres per minute. 

Training nights like these are an important part of keeping our crews prepared and ensuring they are ready for all incidents. 🧑🏼‍🚒

🚨House Fire 🚨

On Tuesday 11th June at 10am, Fire and Rescue NSW received multiple triple zero calls (000) reporting a house fire in Kooringal.

Upon arrival, crews spotted a large smoke plume and requested additional resources.

On arrival, crews found a single storey residential house completely engulfed in flames. Crews immediately began working externally to extinguish the fire.

After successfully knocking down the fire, crews entered the premises to continue extinguishing the fire and searching for anyone inside.

Fortunately, no one was home and crews rescued a dog found in the backyard.

Following a short while, crews contained the fire and began salvage and overhaul operations.

The house suffered significant fire smoke and water damage.

🚒 Fleet Fridays 🚒

Welcome to the final post in our Fleet Fridays mini series! Over the past few weeks we’ve showcased the fire appliances that help protect our community and highlighted the important role each one plays.

🔥 Last up is AP472 – Scania P340 Aerial Pumper.

This specialised appliance combines the capabilities of a traditional fire truck but with an aerial ladder, allowing firefighters to safely access elevated areas, conduct firefighting operations, rescue operations and other emergency incidents.

This appliance is staffed by our permanent firefighters.

AP472 responds to a wide range of emergencies, including:
🏡 Structure fires
🌾 Bush and Grass fires
⚙️ Rescue incidents
🚗 Motor vehicle accidents
⚠️ Hazardous materials incidents
🚨 Automatic fire alarms and other emergency calls

💧 Water Tank: 2,000 litres
🌊 Pump Capacity: 5,000 litres per minute
🪜 Aerial Ladder: 15 meter extension

Inside the truck you’ll also find a range of specialised equipment, including:

🧯 Breathing apparatus

🚒 Fleet Fridays 🚒

Welcome back to Fleet Fridays, where we’re showcasing the fire appliances that help keep our community safe.

This week we’re introducing CT472 – Mercedes-Benz Atego CAFS Tanker.

This appliance is staffed by our on-call firefighters.

This appliance is quite different compared to our urban Pumper, CT472 is designed to carry a larger water supply, and has bush fire, foam and 4X4 capability.

This appliance can respond incidents such as:
🏡 Structure fires
🍂 Bush and grass fires
🌾 Hay stack fires
🗑️ Tip fires
🚗 Motor Vehicle accidents
🚒 Automatic fire alarm’s and other emergency’s

💧 Water Tank: 3,000 litres
💨 Foam tank: 100 litres
🚿 Pump Capacity: Up to 2,800 litres per minute

CT472 carries a wide range of firefighting and rescue equipment, including:
🔥 Firefighting hoses and nozzles
🪜 Ladders
🧯 Breathing apparatus
🪓 Hand tools
💡 Portable lighting
🩹 First aid equipment
⚙️ Rescue equipment

One of the biggest advantages of CT472, is its off road capability as well as the ability to produce foam through the compressed air foam system (cafs).

💨 The cafs system allows us to create different types of foam such as wet and dry foam for different types of incidents such as tip, mulch, hay, car and truck fires.

🔥 CT472 has the capability to respond across the state to large-scale emergencies like major bushfires and floods. These are often referred to as strike teams, involving multiple appliances from various stations working together to assist communities in need.

🚨 Truck Fire – Hume Highway 🚨

Shortly after 10:30 am on 22nd July, Fire and Rescue NSW received multiple Triple Zero (000) calls reporting a truck on fire in a rest area along the Hume Highway.

NSW Rural Fire Service crews arrived first on scene and were confronted with a large dump truck well alight, carrying a significant load of animal by-product (offal). The incident also involved a diesel spill stretching approximately 100 metres.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews arrived shortly afterwards and immediately began helping extinguish the fire and contain the diesel spill, preventing contaminated runoff from spreading, while also managing fluids on the roadway.

Hazmat crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 480 Wagga Wagga also attended the scene and decanted approximately 200 litres of diesel that remained in the trucks fuel tanks, and provided extra absorbent for the spill.

After several hours, the area was rendered safe, and the truck was removed from the rest area. There were no injuries reported.
