Hazard Reductions continue to be planned across Ku-ring-gai and surrounding areas including in Wahroonga on Thursday. Smoke from these Hazard Reductions will continue to be visible in the local area.

❗️ Local residents should keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes. You may also wish to avoid hanging washing outdoors while smoke is present.
❗️ Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns. Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
❗️Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
❗️ Never fly drones or Remote Piloted Aircraft near bush fires or hazard reductions, where aircraft may be operating. Penalties apply.
❗️Remember call 000 if you see fire without a fire truck present.

A hazard reduction burn is planned to be undertaken at Wahroonga (Ku-ring-gai Council LGA) on Thursday 16th April 2026

If you live nearby, please consider doing the following:
- Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering buildings.
- Outdoor items such as outdoor furniture, trampolines, playground equipment etc should be either taken inside or covered. Where this is not practical, items should be hosed down regularly to prevent ember damage.
- Retract plastic or synthetic pool covers to prevent ember damage
- Remove washing from clothes lines.
- Ensure any outdoor pets have a sheltered area.
- If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.
- If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on.
Never fly drones or Remote Piloted Aircraft near bush fires or hazard reductions, where other aircraft may be operating. Penalties apply.

Ku-ring-gai was busy again with a mix of interstate deployments, incidents, and training across the couple of weeks.

With summer weather still in full swing, from heat through to storms, Hazards Near Me will help keep you informed of severe weather, bushfires, and flood risks around your home, and if you are out enjoying the beautiful local walking trails make sure you let someone know where you're going and have the Emergency+ App on your phone to help you pinpoint your location incase something goes wrong.

⛈️ On Sunday 18/1 Ku-ring-gai 1A, PC, and 9, along with other brigades from Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai District were tasked with assisting NSW SES Ku-Ring-Gai Unit following severe weather. Crews undertook pumping and chainsaw works across Ku-ring-gai to help reopen roads, restore access to property, and minimise further damage to homes as a result of the storms.

🔥From 18/1-21/1 one of our Deputy Captains deployed to Victoria as an Arduous Firefighter, working on containment of the Walwa fire, identifying and extinguishing hot spots along the fire's edge.

🚨 On Sunday 25/1 around midday we were called to Assist Police following an Emergency Beacon activation in 40°+ weather by a walker in North Turramurra after they had run out of water and were feeling unwell. Ku-ring-gai PC and 1A responded along with Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW Police, NSW Ambulance, and Davidson Rural Fire Brigade. Thankfully a passer by had given them some extra water and as crews were about to set off into the bush to locate the walker they self-presented to the staging area and all emergency services were able to stand down.

🔥 On Monday 26/1 through until 30/1 another one of our Firefighters travelled to Victoria as part of an Arduous Firefighting Deployment for 5 days with crews from across Greater Sydney - they also worked on the Walwa Rd Fire to continue to strengthen containment lines as conditions continued to deteriorate.

🚨 On Thursday morning 29/1 Ku-ring-gai, along with other brigades from the district, were once again called to Assist Police with a search in North Turramurra after a lady went missing the night before. Thankfully not long after crews arrived on scene, Police located her and all crews were stood down.

🚨 On Friday evening 30/1 Ku-ring-gai PC was paged to support Cherrybrook and Westleigh at an Assist Police incident in Cherrybrook. In what became a protracted and complex incident, crews assisted in extracting multiple patients from the bush.

🚒 On Saturday 31/1 we hosted Tumbledown Dick Rural Fire Brigade at our station for some joint training and familiaristion of the local area. We regularly work with brigades from Northern Beaches Rural Fire District so it was a great opportunity to train together and show them around some of our local fire trails.

It's been a busy week for our team at Ku-ring-gai with crews supporting a range of incidents interstate, across the district, and in our local area. Recent weather across NSW and VIC has shown the importance of having a bushfore survival plan. Whilst we were fortunate it didn't, the Watch & Act fire in Mt Colah on Saturday which was spotting 100s of metres ahead of itself and there was a real risk it could have impacted North Turramurra and Duffys Forest had it taken hold. With warmer weather forecast to potentially return now is the time to prepare. Set up a Watch Zone around your home on Hazards Near Me, and ensure you have a bushfire survival plan and know what you'll do if threatened by fire. https://www.myfireplan.com.au/

🔥On Thursday (8/1) a crew of 4 joined a NSW Strike Team and flew to Victoria ahead of Catastrophic Fire Danger forecast for the weekend. Working off of CFA trucks the crew undertook property protection in the town of Yarck over 3 long days and returned to Sydney on Monday (12/1)

🔥On Friday (9/1) Ku-ring-gai 9 with a crew of 2 departed as part of a Greater Sydney Area Command Strike Team to Southern NSW and were responded to a number of significant fires along the NSW Border and into Victoria throughout their deployment, undertaking property protection and working towards containmentof those fires. They also returned to Sydney on Monday (12/1)

🔥 On Saturday (10/1) with Extreme Fire Danger, Ku-ring-gai 1A with a crew of 6 was tasked to the Watch and Act Fire in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park at Mt Colah. Whilst not part of the initial response our crews worked alongside other brigades from across the Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai District to strengthen containment lines along the fire's edge, using hand tools to clear vegetation from around the fire - reducing the risk of reignition.

🚨 On Sunday (11/1) Ku-ring-gai PC responded with a crew of 6 to an Assist Ambulance call at the Pipeline Trail in St Ives, however we were stood down while en route as we were not required.

🚨 On Monday evening (12/1) Ku-ring-gai 1A with a crew of 5 and Ku-ring-gai 9 with a crew of 2 responded to an MVA on Mona Vale Rd where a vehicle had lost control in the wet and rolled. Working alongside Terrey Hills Brigade, crews provided fire protection while the vehicle was righted and loaded onto a tow truck as well as cleared the roadway from debris as a result of the incident.

🚨 On Tuesday morning (13/1) Ku-ring-gai was paged to a tree down on Mona Vale Rd. Ku-ring-gai 9 responded with our PC not far behind. Terry Hills arrived on scene first and located a bramch that had been cleared from the roadway by a passing motorist and our crews were stood down while en route.

On top of all of this we had crews of 6 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on standby as part of a Pre-Emptive Strike Team (PEST) for a 5 day deployment at 20min notice on Ku-ring-gai 1B. A massive thank you to all our crews and their families for their support over the last week.

We know its the time of year when alot of people like to head away but with severe heatwave weather across the coming days much of NSW, VIC, and SA will see significantly increased fire danger. In these conditions bushfires can be difficult to contain, so whether you're at home or on the road this week its important that you know what you'll do if a bushfire starts.

If you're in NSW, make sure you've downloaded Hazards Near Me and set up a Watch Zone around your home and, if you are on the road this week, around where you are travelling. You can have multiple watch zones in the app. If you're interstate, stay up to date with the advice from local emergency services.
