The Town of Walkerville welcomes the news that the Malinauskas Labor Government is providing an election commitment of $4 million in grant funding to go towards rebuilding the ageing Walkerville Sports Club.

The Walkerville Sports Club building is over 50 years old and is no longer meeting the needs of our local sporting clubs and residents.

Revitalising the old Sports Club has been an important part of Town of Walkerville’s second phase of major projects for the Township, and this funding commitment, together with an additional $4 million provided in Council’s Long Term Financial Plan, will assist Council to get one step closer to implementing this necessary redevelopment.

A new fit-for-purpose Walkerville Sports Club will provide modern facilities to our local football, cricket, softball and netball clubs, as well as the wider community, and ensure we can cater towards the rising demand for women’s participation in sport.

The Walkerville Oval is unavailable for use today, due to scheduled top dressing works.

This maintenance is part of Council's preparations to ensure the grounds are in optimal condition for the upcoming summer season and cricket season.

The community can start using the oval again from tonight, however, for the next couple days the Oval will be a little sandy.

CAN YOU HELP – any knowledge of Charlie/Smiley Lawes (Curtis Charles Lawes) who was reported missing in 1980 by his drinking mate at the Sussex Hotel, David Watson, and found drowned in the Torrens some time later.
He grew up in Gilles Plains, and lived in St Peters while working for 30 years as a painter for E&WS Department. Charlie was a quiet man with a stutter and rode everywhere on his bicycle as he didn’t drive. He also suffered from epilepsy. Charlie had become estranged from his family in Gilles Plains and they have no photos of him. (Charlie was born in Norwood but brought up in Gilles Plains by his parents, ‘Harry’ Albert John Hanton Lawes 1887-1943 and Vallice 1886-1924. There were 3 sons, Reeve, Austin and Curtis). DR PHOEBE CHAPPLE was one of 15 Australian women doctors who undertook overseas military service during World War I and became the first Australian, and the only female doctor, to receive the Military Medal – awarded for gallantry in the field.
Our interest in Dr Phoebe Chapple is that from the first day it opened, she was the honorary medical superintendent of McBride's Maternity Hospital in January 1914 and remained until 1940.

McBride's for those who don't know, was run by the Salvation Army in George Hawker's former residence THE BRIARS at 15 Briar Ave Medindie from 1914 to 1985. It was a training hospital for obstetric nursing. Married mothers upstairs and unmarried downstairs, continuing their work to improve the outcomes for infants.

Despite Phoebe Chapple’s multiple foreign awards, her military service and that of many such women, has been largely overlooked by Australia. read about her ....

This photo is recording the river reconstruction in 1968 so a lot earlier that I first thought. The Ascot Ave bridge was constructed about 1970 so it makes sense. Courtesy of Vale Park Primary School Town of Walkerville Vale Park PS
