As of today, the Bush Fire Danger Period has officially come to an end for most areas across NSW.
While this marks the close of the higher-risk fire season, it’s important to remember that the risk of fire is never completely gone. Conditions can still change quickly, and fires can occur at any time of the year.

Even outside of the Bush Fire Danger Period:
✅ Always check local conditions before lighting any fire
✅ Fire permits may still be required depending on your location and activity
✅ You must notify neighbours and authorities before burning
✅ Be aware of daily Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans

The Bush Fire Danger Period typically runs from 1 October to 31 March, but dates can vary based on local conditions .

🔥 Fire danger ratings are updated daily and indicate how dangerous a fire could be if one starts so it’s important to stay informed and prepared year-round .

For the latest information, fire danger ratings, and safety advice, visit the NSW Rural Fire Service website or download the Hazards Near Me app.

This morning, Bowthorne/Hinton Rural Fire Brigade responded to a structure fire in Hinton caused by an overloaded and failed power board. Crews acted swiftly to contain the fire and minimise further damage.
This incident serves as an important reminder of the risks associated with overloaded power boards and general home electrical safety.

🔌 Electrical Safety Reminder
-Avoid overloading power boards or using multiple high-draw appliances on one board.

-Ensure all power boards are Australian-approved and have overload protection.

-Never piggy-back boards or use damaged or ageing equipment.

-Keep boards away from carpets, bedding, and confined spaces.

🔥 Smoke Alarm Safety
Bowthorne/Hinton RFS urges all residents to ensure:
- Working smoke alarms are installed in all required areas of the home.

-Smoke alarms are checked regularly and replaced if faulty or outdated.

- Any replacements, wiring concerns, or hard-wired alarms are handled by a licensed electrician.

Simple precautions significantly reduce the risk of house fires.
Thank you to
NSW Ambulance & NSW Police Force for their response to the incident.

On Thursday night, our Bowthorne/Hinton crew was deployed to the Oyster Cove fire near Medowie, initially undertaking property protection as the fire approached nearby residences.
Once conditions became suitable, our members worked in coordination with other Group 2 brigades to conduct a tactical backburn, assisting in the strengthening of containment lines and reducing available fuel ahead of the main fire front.

Our brigade then returned on Sunday, 1st February, to resume patrolling and mop-up operations, ensuring residual hot spots were fully extinguished and the area remained secure.
We extend our appreciation to all volunteers involved for their professionalism and ongoing commitment, as well as to the community for your continued support.
