π Remembering Black Saturday, Saturday 7 February 2009 β 17 Years On
Today marks 17 years since the devastating day that changed so many lives across Victoria. Known forever as Black Saturday, February 7 remains one of the darkest days in Australian history.
We continue to remember:
βͺ 173 lives lost
βͺ Thousands of families bereaved
βͺ Over 400 people injured
βͺ More than 2,000 homes destroyed
βͺ Countless pets, wildlife, and livestock lost
βͺ Over 7,500 people displaced
βͺ 430,000+ hectares burnt
βͺ 10,000+ km of fencing lost
βͺ 109 towns and localities impacted
The real toll - emotional and psychological - can never be fully counted. And while the number 173 is official, the lives lost to injury and trauma in the weeks and years after remind us the impact was far greater.
We honour those who were lost. We stand with those who survived. And we thank those who stepped up to help - emergency services, neighbours, and volunteers who showed remarkable courage.
For many, this anniversary stirs painful memories. If you're one of them, you may find this video comforting and supportive:

Please join us in pausing for a minute of silence at 7pm tonight to reflect and remember.
While we mark what was lost, we also acknowledge the new connections, strength, and community spirit that have grown in the 17 years since.
