Did you know a threatened species calls Wangaratta home? 🐛

The Yurrnga Ganbina / Golden Sun Moth, one of Australia's most unique and threatened insects, lives in a small area behind Barr Reserve.

To protect the moth during its short breeding season, Council avoids mowing and slashing the site from mid-October to early January. The species relies on native grasslands, particularly wallaby grass, and spends up to three years underground before emerging as an adult for just a few days.

Since the moth was confirmed at the site in 2020, Council has carefully managed the area to support this important local population. This work continues a long tradition of grassland stewardship, with Traditional Owners using cultural fire practices for thousands of years to create and maintain habitat for species like the Golden Sun Moth.

Welcome to the School Crossing Supervisor team, Andrew!

"Starting my role as a School Crossing Supervisor is a proud moment for me."

Andrew is now in his fifth week working with Rural City of Wangaratta, helping local students get to and from school safely.

With support from the VMCH Employment Pathways team, Andrew secured the role and has quickly become a familiar face in the community. From chatting with students to greeting parents and grandparents, he's loving the chance to make a real difference each day.

Congratulations on your new role, Andrew. We're cheering you on every step of the way. 👏👏👏

Happy National Wattle Day! 💛

Wattles are a familiar sign of spring, but not every wattle is native to our region.

Red Stemmed Wattle (Acacia rubida), Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) and Gold Dust Wattle (Acacia acinacea) are all examples of indigenous species found across the Rural City of Wangaratta. They're more than just a splash of colour, helping to boost nitrogen in the soil, providing food for birds and pollinators, and offering shelter and habitat for native wildlife.

Cootamundra Wattle (Acacia baileyana), while native to Australia, naturally occurs in a small area around Cootamundra in New South Wales. In our region it is considered an environmental w**d because it can spread into bushland, waterways and roadsides, taking over from local species and reducing biodiversity.

Choosing indigenous species in our gardens and revegetation projects helps support local wildlife and protect the unique ecosystems of our region.
