Yagan Class – Term 2 PBL: The Science of Dreaming

This term, Yagan students have been exploring the fascinating connection between science and Aboriginal knowledge through our Project-Based Learning unit, The Science of Dreaming.

Students investigated both chemical reactions and physical changes through a range of hands-on experiments, including the milk and dishwashing liquid experiment, the candle and jar investigation, and exploring the science behind why toast changes colour when heated.

Along the way, students learnt about the Fire Triangle and the conditions needed for combustion to occur. They also developed their understanding of how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have used their deep knowledge of fire, land, weather and seasonal change to care for Country for thousands of years.

Through inquiry, observation and discussion, students have strengthened their scientific thinking while developing an appreciation for the rich knowledge systems of Australia's First Nations peoples.

We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, participation and growing confidence our students have demonstrated throughout the term. 🌿🧪🔥

Leadership 1 Wednesday Gate Project

This term, the Year 12 Leadership 1 class has been running fortnightly activities at the school gate as part of their Community Service Project for the Certificate I in Leadership. The class chose to create this initiative to help welcome students to school, promote positive interactions, and strengthen our school community. Students receive tickets for demonstrating positive school behaviours, such as wearing the correct uniform and arriving at school on time and go in the draw for a chance to win a prize. A range of themed activities have also been held, including Wellness Wednesday, State of Origin celebrations, and the much-loved photo booth. Students have enthusiastically embraced the initiative, starting their day with positivity, connection, and a sense of belonging.

Pathway Planning Week 4 – Volunteering Highlights

During Week 4, a number of students once again stepped beyond the classroom to volunteer and make a meaningful contribution to our local community. We are incredibly proud of the compassion, initiative, and dedication they continue to demonstrate through their service to others.
At Horsepower, Mia, Jazmine and Angelo supported lessons, exercised horses, and assisted with feeding and animal care.
At St Brendan’s Homeless Respite, Jacob, Caleb, Rocky, Chad, Jack, Joel and Kaleb helped prepare and serve meals, assisted with morning setup, and supported pack-down activities.

At Baptistcare Gracehaven, Aroha, Rocky, Declan, Olivia, Nirvana, Koda, Josh, Aidan, Chelsea, Emma, Caleb, Storm, Marley and Isaac brought joy to residents through conversation, games, walks, rickshaw rides, music, singing, dancing, and creative activities.

Bianca volunteered at Little Paws Play School Doggy Daycare, caring for dogs and supporting their daily needs.

Mason, Devan and Jacob volunteered at Sherwood Kennels, caring for dogs and contributing to the day to day maintenance of the boarding kennels.

Jacob also continued volunteering at Toddler Jam at Warnbro Community Church, assisting with kitchen and food preparation duties.

Thank you to our community organisations for welcoming and supporting our students as they continue to make a positive impact through volunteering.

Workplace Learning Highlights – Pathway Planning Week 4

Many of our students engaged in Workplace Learning opportunities across our local community, gaining valuable hands-on experience and insight into a variety of industries. We are incredibly proud of the professionalism, enthusiasm, and maturity they consistently demonstrate in the workplace and the positive impression they leave on our local employers.
Owen, Declan, Hudson and Ritchie developed retail and bakery skills at Woolworths.

Tysen gained hands-on automotive industry experience at Mad Mechanical and ID Automotive Repairs.

Caylen continued pursuing his passion for automotive mechanics at Challenger Ford, learning vehicle servicing skills.

Chad, Isaac, Jacob and Owen further developed their employability skills at Workpower in the Timber and Packaging Rooms.

Bianca gained further retail experience at Red Dot Home where she priced and shelved new stock and contributed to the store's daily processes.

Jazmine and Shylah attended Petstock, building valuable retail and customer service skills in the pet industry.

Jack attended workplace learning at Good Sammy’s, assisting with sorting books, shoes and clothing, while helping maintain the store environment.
We thank our local employers for their ongoing support in providing these valuable opportunities and helping our students build confidence for their future pathways.

Since the beginning of the year, two of our Year 7 classes have been exploring the many uses of code. Students have been developing their problem-solving skills, creating their own music and art through code, and even getting a glimpse into the use of virtual reality. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, creativity, growth in problem solving skills and their coding skills improve.

We would like to congratulate Ritchie on successfully gaining employment with Hungry Jack’s. Ritchie has shown fantastic resilience and determination throughout the process, particularly after not being successful on his first application and having the confidence to apply again, which resulted in him securing the position.

In addition to his role at Hungry Jack’s, Ritchie has also taken on shifts at a local Fish & Chip shop between his regular hours, demonstrating a wonderful work ethic and commitment.

Fabulous work, Ritchie — we are all incredibly proud of your achievements!
