πŸ’š _National Volunteer Week_ πŸ’š

This week we celebrate the incredible people who make Waroona Sub Centre what it is β€” our volunteers.

No matter the role you hold, the hours you give, or the support you provide behind the scenes, please know that your dedication, compassion, and commitment to helping others never goes unnoticed.

At Waroona, we are proud to have volunteers who are:
W – Welcoming, Willing, and Wonderful
A – Amazing, Approachable, and Always Caring
R – Respectful, Reliable, and Resilient
O – Outstanding, Open-hearted, and Organised
O – Observant, Optimistic, and Offering Support
N – Noble, Nurturing, and Never Afraid to Help
A – Appreciated, Admired, and Absolutely Valued

Thank you for the difference you make within our community each and every day. Whether you are on road, supporting behind the scenes, training, mentoring, gardening, checking community AED's, or simply being there when needed β€” you are the heart of Waroona.

Happy National Volunteer Week to every one of our amazing volunteers πŸ’šπŸš‘πŸ’š

⚠️ CYCLONE PREP TIME – CARNARVON TO PERTH ⚠️
Righto… this isn’t the time to sit there watching model runs like it’s Netflix.

If you’re anywhere between Carnarvon and Perth, now’s the time to get your act together. Not panic… just don’t be the bloke chasing his trampoline down the street at 2am.

DFES has already laid it out pretty clearly (link in comments)

This Cyclone Prep Guide is more aimed at Pilbara Cyclones but it gives people a rough idea of what to prepare for.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🧠 HAVE A PLAN (Yes… an actual plan, not β€œshe’ll be right”)
Cyclones don’t exactly send you a calendar invite. They can ramp up fast, so know:
β€’ Where you’ll shelter
β€’ If/when you’ll leave
β€’ How you’ll contact family

If your house won’t handle it… leave early. Last-minute heroics don’t end well. οΏΌ

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🧰 PACK AN EMERGENCY KIT (aka survive without Uber Eats)
You’ll want:
β€’ Water + non-perishable food
β€’ Torch + batteries
β€’ Radio
β€’ First aid kit
β€’ Cash + meds

Basically, enough gear to survive a few days if everything goes pear-shaped. οΏΌ

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🏑 SORT YOUR PROPERTY (before it becomes airborne)
Do it now, not when it’s blowing 100km/h:
β€’ Tie down or bring in loose items (furniture, trampolines, bins)
β€’ Clear gutters and drains
β€’ Trim dodgy branches
β€’ Get sandbags ready if flooding’s a risk

Because yes… that random chair WILL try to become a missile. οΏΌ

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸš— FUEL UP & STAY CONNECTED
β€’ Fill the car ( if you can afford it πŸ˜• )
β€’ Charge your phone (and everything else you pretend you don’t rely on)
β€’ Keep an eye on official updates

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ“‘ STAY INFORMED
Cyclones bring:
β€’ Destructive winds
β€’ Heavy rain & flooding
β€’ Storm surge near the coast

And they can track further south than you think… yes, even towards Perth. οΏΌ

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

FINAL WORD
No one’s saying this thing is definitely smashing your suburb… but if it does, you’ll wish you spent an hour preparing instead of scrolling.

Be smart. Be ready. And for once, beat the wind to it.

It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of one of Waroona St John Ambulance’s most treasured members, Thelma Rafferty OStJ.

Thelma was one of our inaugural volunteers, joining Waroona St John Ambulance in the late 1950s. Her dedication to our organisation and community spanned decades. Even in recent years, she continued to serve as a Committee Member, remaining active until around eight years ago.

In recognition of her outstanding service and commitment to her community, Thelma was awarded the honour of Officer of the Order of St John (OStJ). This recognition reflected the compassion, dedication, and quiet strength she brought to everything she did.

Thelma’s care for her patients, kindness to fellow volunteers, and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working alongside her. As a Patron of Waroona St John Ambulance, she remained a guiding and much-loved presence within our organisation.

Her legacy of service, compassion, and community spirit will never be forgotten.

Our thoughts are with Thelma’s family, Bill, Alan, Graham & Tracey, friends, and all who knew and loved her.

Rest in peace, Thelma OStJ. You will be deeply missed.

What an incredible honour for Waroona SJWA to receive the Active Citizenship Award at the Waroona 2026 Australia Day celebrations.
This award recognises not only who we are today, but the many past members whose dedication, commitment and compassion helped shape our Sub Centre over the years. I would like to sincerely thank all our volunteers β€” past, present and future β€” for the service you give, and have given, to our community.
Your generosity, selflessness and willingness to be there when it matters most does not go unnoticed. You are truly an amazing group of people, and Waroona is incredibly fortunate to have you. πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸš‘πŸš‘πŸ’šπŸ’š
