On this day, one year ago, two of our colleagues were tragically killed in the line of duty.

Today, and every day, we remember Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart and the tragedy that occurred in Porepunkah on 26 August 2025.

We thank everyone for their support and solidarity on this difficult day.

APPEAL FOR WITNESSES TO COLLISION

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed a collision today in Traralgon. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30pm. The pictured vehicle is alleged to have been hoon driving in the lead up to the crash, losing control whilst doing a burnout through the roundabout at Liddiard Road and Hunter Street.
The offending vehicle then collided with a Gippsland Water Chlorinator, completely dislodging it from the ground and causing extensive damage.
The vehicle appeared to be in convoy with a red Holden Commodore. Both vehicles were displaying P plates and were last seen travelling west bound on Hunter Road.

If you witnessed the incident, or have dash cam footage, please contact First Constable Besselink at Traralgon on 51722700.

A text. A phone call. A code.

That’s all it took for scammers to steal enough money from Lindy to leave her in debt.

“They rush you through it and make you panic.”

Behind every scam report is a real person and a real story.

Think you’d spot a scam? So did thousands of Australians.

More than 270,000 people fell victim to scams across Australia last year, so we’re urging everyone to:
🛑 Stop. Take a moment before giving your money or personal information to anyone.
👀 Check. Is the person or organisation you’re dealing with legit?
🔐 Protect. Act quickly if something feels wrong.

It’s worth just checking.

It takes seconds to steal a number plate. It only takes minutes to help secure one.
✅ Secure your number plates with anti-theft screws or pop rivets.
✅ Park in a garage or driveway where possible.
✅ Consider sensor lighting and CCTV at home.
✅ Park in well-lit areas when on the street.

Stolen number plates are often used to avoid identification while committing offences, which can leave vehicle owners dealing with unwanted fines and other complications.

Through our SafePL8 program, Victoria Police, SES and Neighbourhood Watch regularly attend community events to fit anti-theft screws and share practical advice on keeping your number plates secure.

Do you know the Slow To 4️⃣0️⃣ Rule?

Operation BARRIER 🚑🚒🚓🚧🚫

Police in Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shires will commence Operation BARRIER from 20th August 2026.

You are legally required to slow down to 40km/h when passing emergency, incident response and roadside assistance vehicles that are stationary or moving slower than 10km/h and have flashing lights or an alarm sounding.

If you don't slow to 40, you may be fined $366.

These rules are aimed to ensure the safety of workers operating emergency, enforcement and incident response vehicles.

When you see flashing lights (red, blue, magenta or yellow) and the vehicle is stopped or moving slower than 10km/h you must:

🔹start to safely slow down to 40km/h.
(check your rear-view mirror first, especially on high-speed roads)
🔹Pass the scene at 40km/h speed and be able to stop if directed.
🔹Return to the legal speed limit after you are a safe distance from the scene.

Tips to keep your tools safe:

👮‍♀️Lock your vehicle when it is unattended, even at worksites.

👮‍♀️Lock external toolboxes and equipment, if they cannot be removed.

👮Engraving your tools with a unique identifier—such as the letter 'V' followed by your state driver's licence number—makes them hard for thieves to sell and helps Victoria Police return recovered gear to you.

👮‍♂️Make an inventory: Take clear photos of every item, including serial numbers and unique marks.
