Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board The DDMRB's key role is to protect Queensland’s environment and economy from the impacts of rabbits.

The Darling Downs Moreton Rabbit Board maintains the 555km rabbit-proof fence that runs from Mt Gipps near Rathdowney through to Goombi near Chinchilla, where it meets the Wild Dog Barrier Fence. This fence is absolutely essential in keeping Queensland as the only Australian state that is relatively rabbit free! est ways to control them, and why Queensland tries to keep rabbits out. Unfortunately, while rabbits may be cute, they're also very destructive! Construction on the DDMRB fence began in 1890s after rabbits were introduced to Australia and quickly became a plague, breeding extremely fast, eating huge amounts of pasture and crops, competing with native Australian animals for shelter and food, and destroying sapling trees, fields of grass, native plants, and even ringbarking bigger trees. Since the fence's construction Queensland has remained the only Australian state that is relatively rabbit free. As the state that hosts the majority of Australia's large-scale food production and farming, it's critical to protect our agriculture, farmers, and food supply from rabbits, that can quickly decimate entire farms. Queensland is also home to a number of precious native plants and animals that are a risk from wild rabbit populations, so it's essential to protect them too. DDMRB was pleased to take part in the 2026 Wild Rabbit Roundtable, hosted earlier this month by the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

More than 50 participants from across the country joined the online discussion, with highlights including:

🐇 the next phase of rabbit biocontrol research is now underway in partnership with the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions, CSIRO, governments and Meat & Livestock Australia.

🐇 a key focus moving forward is extending the national rabbit management coordination program to support the adoption of best practice control.

If you’re travelling in southern Qld you might see one of these on the rabbit fence.

We’re rolling out a network of 4G cameras on our fence to augment our rabbit monitoring systems.

These motion activated cameras send images to an AI platform that does all the heavy lifting.

Rabbit images are recorded and everything else discarded, which provides automated monitoring and real-time information on any rabbit activity along the fence.

When you see it it seems bonkers and an obvious fail.

But time and again people think a property boundary line matters to rabbits.

Rabbits don't care about boundaries. They have no sense on who owns what. In their minds THEY own everything.

Filling the warrens on the left and leaving open the warrens on the right with the boundary fence in between means the rabbits stay and impact both properties.

You can your turn your place into a rabbit-proof zone. Your choice. They will keep trying to get in and eventually they will.
